The weather is fine. The afternoons are free. And with nothing better to do there are a number of new roads to explore. Interesting letterboxes and abandoned houses just seem to appear from nowhere.

This one, just off SH29 near the Kaimai summit, was probably abandoned a few years ago. The chimney remains as the only evidence that a house once stood on this site. No trees. No level ground. Nothing but grass all around.

On Oropi Rd. It's unusual today to see the corrugated iron chimneys that were quite common on old huts. The building on the left still has the chimney intact.
