in reply to: Heat-pumps ? #12321IMHO a heat pump is far superior to an unflued gas heater. Get a reputable brand with a reputable company and installer for support. There's little difference between the efficiency and noise levels of the main brands. Get the company to calculate the size and type of unit you'd need, with an on-site visit. Location, room size, insulation, etc make a difference to how much heat output is required. Placement and noise level of the outdoor unit can make a difference to how your neighbours perceive you.You can get units now that will detect if anyone is present in the room, and if there's no movement they will turn down the temperature. This may or may not be useful, depending on how much you move around.

Talking of Jawa farm bikes, this is a somewhat younger incarnation of me on my father's first (I think) farm bike. A Jawa. Sometime around 1965.
in reply to: Re: Arai Freeway open face helmet #12120Real bikers expose flesh !
The more flesh you expose, the safer you are. As evidenced by this safety ad.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VH34xzIdY58
in reply to: The Chain gang #11917It may not be the cheapest but the best chain lube is called 'shaft drive'!
Even better would be an in-hub electric or hydraulic motor. But back to reality, although you can get bicycles with shaft drive I have yet to see a 250 or 650cc dual-purpose or off-road bike with shaft drive.
in reply to: The Chain gang #11914Two of the cheapest chain lube systems are the Tutoro and the Loobman. The Loobman is also available in NZ from Nigel Marx in Christchurch. You can find his email address and a review in this Kiwibiker thread.
in reply to: Bike stands #11900Ventura (Dold Industries in Hamilton) do one in a size to suit dirt bike front wheels. Almost any motorbike shop should be able to source one. See Ventura's web site for details.
in reply to: F650GS (twin) #11353That looks like a short hose to me. It should be up against those ribs acting as a hose stop. I'm still waiting for mine to be replaced. For more than you will ever need to know about radiator hoses on F650/800GS have a look at the sticky thread on UKGSer F650/800GS forum.
in reply to: F650GS (twin) #11349Congratulations, Gerda. It's a great bike.If it's one of the earliest models there are (at least) two things you should check, or get Experience to check. They were common faults, according to the various forums. The chains on some early bikes were either bad quality or from a bad batch, and would develop tight spots, wear, or just break after only a short distance. If it's still the original chain keep a watch out for tight spots. The links don't move easily, and you'll see definite kinks in the chain when it's not stretched tight. It should be a replacement under warranty if it fails. At the same time it's worth getting the front sprocket from the F800GS installed, to lower the gearing slightly. Some chain failures may also have been due to the rear wheel not being aligned correctly.Another common fault is a radiator hose that is slightly too short, which can dislodge completely at one end. One of the hoses from the radiator to the engine. Again it should be replaced under warranty if it's one of the short ones.
According to the Mount Motorcycles Christmas Newsletter the G650X bikes had special pricing until December 24. But I see they still have the X-Challenge at $9995 on the Motorcycle Trader web site. They will be closed tomorrow (Monday, Anniversary day) but I can call them on Tuesday and ask if it's still available. With a new bike you have to add the cost of registration, about $300 to $350.
