VisorDown has the first UK road test of the new BMW F800R. Not a very positive review, even though the introduction calls it “a surprisingly good entry-level middleweight.” I don't understand why they call it a German Street Triple, since it's a twin, but I guess it's a nod to the Triumph Street Triple.

    Another press release from BMW:

Two dynamic roadsters – but which one would you choose?

The two roadsters are the S1000R and the R NineT. The summary:"So there you have it, two completely different bikes that can be admired and enjoyed in contrasting scenarios. Each is very desirable in its own unique way, so the only way for you to find out which one is best for you is to test ride them both. It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it."The full press release can be found at: http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/individual/news/2011/news.jsp?id=3912

Here's another option for police bike.

BMW C evolution Scooters Delivered to Barcelona Police

"Did you know that BMW currently supplies over 80,000 motorcycles worldwide for law enforcement use? Agencies in over 150 countries on five continents currently use BMW motorcycles. In the USA alone, more than 225 law-enforcement agencies use BMW machinery. And soon, more and more of those agencies will pilot electrically-powered two wheelers, such as the BMW C evolution scooter. The trend began this week when BMW Motorrad supplied 30 of its C evolution scooters to Barcelona City Hall for use by local police."2015-bmw-c-evolution-delivered-to-barcelona-police-1.jpgThe photos and remainder of the story can be found at: https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2015/03/18/bmw-c-evolution-scooters-delivered-to-barcelona-police/No doubt there will also be a press release from BMW at some stage.

2015 BMW S1000RR Review | Forgiveness at COTA

Ultimate Motocycling has a review of the 2015 S1000RR, witten by Ron Lieback, from riding on track at COTA (Circuit of the Americas). The conclusion:From a track standpoint, Roland Sands said it best. The RR provides “absolute speed with absolutely no drama.” When a bike is this good, a track rider can remain completely focused on learning the circuit and perfecting lines – even at the monstrous Circuit of the Americas.I concur with Sands, though I would need at least a week at COTA to ride within 20 percent of Sands’ ability. The bike I would choose? Without a doubt the S1000RR – it’s just that good, and would allow endless hours of fun while playing a never-ending game of catch up with riders like Sands. And the post-ride limp would surely be worth it. Sign me up, please. The full review can be found at: https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2015/03/17/2015-bmw-s1000rr-review-forgiveness-at-cota/

Proud to ride ‘like a girl’

With her blond hair, piercing green eyes and smart business attire, Maria Costello gives the impression that she could hold her own in any executive boardroom, but put her in a set of racing leathers and there’s no doubting the steely determination of the 41-year-old motorcycle racing fanatic who regularly takes on – and beats – the boys in international championships across the globe. BMW Motorrad tries to keep up with the inspirational Maria Costello, arguably the perfect role model for women in motorsports.Continue reading the BMW Press Release and see the photos at: http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/individual/news/2011/news.jsp?id=3885

Yes, but what I'm trying to get at is that the 1up preload setting would or should be quite different for a lightweight 60kg rider and for a heavier 120kg rider. Can the preload level that the 1up setting selects be stored in the on-board computer? Or is there a manual adjustment on the shock itself which determines what the 1up setting corresponds to? Or is the 1up setting always at a fixed preload level, irrespective of the rider's weight? If so, heavier riders would presumably be riding around in 1up + luggage or 2up setting permanently.

in reply to: Sommet Sports #18551

The PledgeMe campaign has closed, with less than $50,000 of the required $300,000 pledged. Presumably this means that Sommet Sports will not be making a comeback, and there will be no MotoGP coverage in NZ on TV this year. A VideoPass for MotoGP seems to be the only option, as I have no desire to download from any torrent sites. Unfortunately it's considerably more expensive than the WSBK one.

Many thanks for the update, Gremlin. Sounds like an interesting and busy weekend. Is there no method of setting the default preload on the Ohlins manually? Since 1up varies so greatly from one rider to another I'd have thought that the base setting could be adjusted manually. Or is that done alone by the choice of spring rate?

Is BMW going to produce another 3-cylinder motorcycle? And another cruiser? This time, according to the rumours, it will be a W3 engine layout in a cruiser.

BMW's Radical W-3 Cruiser | UP TO SPEEDCould this patented W-Triple engine be the next new Beemer platform?

It’s been a decade since BMW cancelled the R1200C, but the firm has always intended to make a return to the cruiser category. Now we’ve seen the first indications as to how it will go about it.Not only had the R1200C failed to capture the enthusiasm of cruiser buyers, but the boxer twin wasn’t suited to the large-capacity trend that the market has followed. Switching to a V-twin would be too much like following the herd, but the firm has now hit on the idea of using a novel W-3 engine layout—creating a machine that can wear familiar cruiser clothing but which will also be unlike anything else on the market.Continue reading the article at MotorcyclistOnline: http://www.motorcyclistonline.com/bmws-radical-triple-concept-and-w-3-cruiser-to-speed

There is a film being made of a Compass Expeditions adventure ride from London to Siberia via the Road of Bones. BMW has issued a press release about the trip and film, which can be found at:  http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/individual/news/2011/news.jsp?id=3845

    Adventure motorcycling enters the mainstream…

There’s a saying among riders that goes something like this: “Travelling by car is like watching a movie – but travelling by motorcycle is like being in one”. For a selected group of riders, this actually came true because a film has been made of their incredible journey and it’s going to be doing the rounds in Cannes next month.Continue reading at the URL above, or go and see the teaser trailer on YouTube:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfT7pJP7hz4 (Warning - Charlie Boorman is involved, but apparently only as narrator!)

BMW Motorrad wins in four of seven categories and celebrates a total of ten podiums in the “Motorcycle of the Year 2015” Readers' Choice Award by MOTORRAD.The URLs for BMW press releases are almost as long as the articles themselves. The article with the above heading can be found at: https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/pressDetail.html?title=bmw-motorrad-wins-in-four-of-seven-categories-and-celebrates-a-total-of-ten-podiums-in-the-motorcycle&outputChannelId=6&id=T0205986EN&left_menu_item=node__6629The gist of the article is that BMW bikes won a reader poll in 4 different categories, came second in 3 other categories and third place in 3 further categories. The 4 winners were R1200RS (Tourer/Sports Tourer), S1000RR (Sportsbikes), R1200GS (Enduro/Supermoto), and R NineT (Modern Classics).

Even the NZ Herald has got in on the act, with Matthieu Day writing a review of the F800GS. “Easy rider with spirit of adventure” and “The BMW GS range offers plenty of fun on and off the road” are the two headlines. Anyone care to try and beat this record before it becomes official? From the BMW press release, readable at:  http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/individual/news/2011/news.jsp?id=3829

BMW S 1000 RR rider wheelies to new Guinness World Record – on ice

With some help from the BMW S 1000 RR, 24-year-old Swedish rider Robert Gull has become the first guy to wheelie a motorcycle over 200 km/h on a frozen lake, and in doing so has set a new Guinness World Record for the "Fastest motorcycle wheelie on ice".Swedish riders never let the winter get in the way of a good ride, they just use the smooth iced tops of frozen lakes instead of roads, and spiked tyres instead of sticky rubber. With plenty of ice guaranteed for several months every year, this offers lots of opportunities for sports, but why play ice hockey or go skating when you can ride your RR instead?---Read the rest of the story and see the photos in the linked article.
