When I was rebuilding my R90S I needed new headers, crosspipe and mufflers. I considerered stainless but then found chinese replicas of BMW OEM pipes at a quarter of the price of BMW OEM or stainless. They are exact copies and so far I would rate the fit, quality of the chrome etc on a par with the BMW originals. I'm not too keen on the color stainless often goes so decided I would rather have the option of replacing the whole set up four times than go for the stainless. I must say I don't regret my decision so it is an option well worth considering. I can let you have more details if you are interested.
in reply to: Where are all the airheads in Auckland? #12203Thanks. I bought it new in 1975 and have had it since. Yes I did bring it over from South Africa with me so it has been most places on tar seal over there too. I had it in storage for many years, while our children were young, and rebuilt it about a year (12,000 km ago). We did a lot of touring, and in fact went on honeymoon on it about thirty years ago, so with all the memories tied up in it, fortunately neither of us ever had the heart to sell it. We are loving it now although also have an oilhead GS which we perhaps use more.
in reply to: Where are all the airheads in Auckland? #12200Hi RussellIf you don't want to go to the Flickr site or see my R90S with scenery in the background. Here is one pic of it taken on a BMWOR ride
in reply to: Where are all the airheads in Auckland? #12199Lots of pictures of my R90S travelling around South Island can be found on my Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/geckoracing/sets In some of the sets I am on my oilhead GS but I usually differentiate in the title by adding 90S or R90S
in reply to: Intermittent ignition – R850R 1999 #11525Re: “Phil – which one of the relays is the fuel pump relay? My bike manual only mentions what the fuses are for, but makes no mention of the fuel pump relay? I hope it is something as simple as the relay, as the pump would be an expensive item for sure.”Looking at the fuse/relay box from the top - on the row on the opposite side from the fuses - the big one on the right is the starter motor relay, the next to the left is the load relief relay, to the left of that the horn relay (then there is a partition) and to the left of that is the fuel pump relay. (next to that the motronic relay then ABS then blank/aux lighting)At least that is how I remember them to be laid outGood luck

Just bad luck I think. It being the first day the road was open, the loose gravel wasn't only at the side of the road. There were little piles of marbles in some pretty unpredictable places.A couple of minutes before he came down, we had stopped to lift someone else's bike back onto the road and there was some talk about whether ABS should be on or off when riding on shingle. He said he had just tried out with ABS off but I think his 1200 has that brake boosting which must be very difficult to feather on the shingle. I was quite happy with my ABS on and mine (1150GS) doesn't have that unnecessary boosting.
I did the Molesworth leg on 30th Dec with the group from Nelson. A great ride despite puncture and a couple of broken spokes. I have put some pictures on my Flickr site http://www.flickr.com/photos/geckoracing/sets/ Most of them were taken with a helmet cam mounted on the front indicator stalk
