in reply to: Gravel ride from Port Albert to Puhoi #6656
Make that 7 U turns Alex, 😐 I missed a subtle fork in the last gravel section back to the highway! at least the GPS tells you pretty quickly that you've missed a turn, rather than the usual approach of carrying on obliviously, then ignoring the nagging doubts for another couple of k's, before admitting defeat! Good ride though 😀 Your ears recovered from the Scorpion zorst yet?
in reply to: Upgrade R80 motor to 100? #6201Motorworks in the UK used to sell a kit of secondhand parts to do this conversion. Might be worth talking to them as a last resort!. They’ve got a website, google motorworks should find it ok
in reply to: Torque wrenches. any suggestions? #6064For what it’s worth, I’ve carried out all servicing on my 1100S and 1150GS, over a total of 110,000k’s and the only remotely difficult operation is balancing the throttle bodies. I’ve got a Calamander electronic balancer which is absurdly accurate and seems to do a better job than fully trained BMW techies! Any time anyone wants to have a go with it, I’d be more than happy to oblige. (and offer assistance as required) Any sunday morning, Helensville.
in reply to: Information on Welligton customs. #5786I went through this process 18 months ago when I bought my GS and a dirt bike in from the UK. If I remember correctly, the shipping agent will arrange for the MAFF inspection, I didn’t have to uncrate the bikes for MAFF, they or the shipping company partially dismantled the crate. I went the following day and finished de-crating, put wheels on etc. Then took the bike across the road to get the compliance stuff done. You have to wait a minimum of 24 hours after the MAFF inspection before getting the compliance done to give MAFF time to get your bike’s VIN number on the computer system. After that it was plain sailing. Think it cost me about $400 in total for the GS.
in reply to: How staunch are you? #5768Here’s a pic of my GS 1/2 an hour after arriving home from work one night in the UK in very similar conditions, biggest problem was getting round abandoned cars!
Worst problem in the UK is freezing fog, it deposits layer upon layer of ice on your visor, if you then open your visor to see, it freezes your eyelashes together!in reply to: Lost & Found #5767So someone has a whistler Crusiaider radar detector, just about to get from from the States, where they are 1/2 the NZ price! Any comments as to quality etc?
in reply to: The Long Way North, and other adventures #5732Alex, yes, I agree 6 weeks is a bit optimistic! Can only dream! I broke my right tib and fib about 25 years ago, much more trauma, open fracture etc, that time I was put in a full leg plaster for 9 months before they decided to put a nail in! In total I was in plaster for 11 months and off work for 13! At least this break was closed, all the metalwork was put in place within 24 hours, I’m not in plaster at all, just a ‘moon boot’ to wear when I go out, round the house and in bed I can just leave the leg fully exposed, it’s great! (relative term! not break would be better!) very little pain, just a bit uncomfortable at night on occasion. Don’t know if I got SS or Ti, didn’t even know there was the option of Ti. I’ll ask when I see the doctor again in 3 weeks, when hopefully he says I can weightbear.
Cheers
Tonyin reply to: Servicing, who do you use? #5559I’ve always understood the situation with BMW (and other) warranties, is that you can do your own servicing without affecting the warranty, obviously unless the failure is due to an act or omission on your part! That was certainly how things worked in the UK between myself, my dealer and BMWUK.
in reply to: Two-stroke cylinders #5476I’ve got two GasGas barrels, a 250 and a 300, they’ve both had seizures, but may be recoverable……..FOC if they’re any good to you.
in reply to: Emission setup on NZ market bikes #5389My experience with a single spark 1100S and twin spark 1150GS, is that the best set up is to dump the cat, by whatever means, Y-piece, remus system etc etc, and install a Techlusion fuel adjustment device. Don’t know if they’re available in NZ, but you can certainly get one from the US or UK. Website http://www.techlusion.com
in reply to: U.S. imports #4946It was a simple operation on an 1100S, the headlight shell rotated through 90 degrees so the cut off changed sides, don’t know if it’s the same on the GS, don’t think so, haven’t had cause to check it out over here. It was only relevant in the UK for trips to Europe.
in reply to: U.S. imports #4943Speedo will be in mph. Don’t know if it’s the same on a GS, but on my 1100S, it was a very easy job to realign the headlight cutoff pattern for right or left hand
in reply to: Radar Detectors #4852Steve,
Thanks for the very helpful comments...There was I,thinking I'd left all the arrogant, self righteous t*ssers back in the UK, but it would appear not! Don't fancy a job with UK plod do you? Think you'd fit right in!
OK, subject closed.
Gidday Broossee! Have you got some sort of spybot software searching for any motorcycle forum postings by user name 'tonys'?
