Welcome Homer. I owned a 1985 R80 for 10 years. Served me very well. Are you a member of the BMWOR? You'll find other members who have the same sort of bike and bike-chit-chat is always high in points of discussion. I would encourage you to join if you are not.

Welcome to our site and forum. I checked out your web pages briefly and it's a great site. (Even if I did get a 'Pop-ups Blocked' prompt.) Love the Extreme award concept and the members gallery. This is where they is: http://www.bmwclubs.co.za/index1.html

Reminds me when my 1985 R80 wouldn't start. Tried all the rider/owner does and finally took it to the 'shop. Turned out to be the ECU. (That's the Electronic Control Unit.)

Is there a forum for the K/LT bikes? Other BMW bikes have them; GS, Cruiser, RT….

A gynecologist had become fed up with malpractice insurance and was on the verge of being burned out. Hoping to try another career where skillful hands would be beneficial, he decided to change careers and become a motorcycle mechanic. He found out from the local technical college what was involved, signed up for evening classes, attended diligently, and learned all he could. When the time for the practical exam approached, the gynecologist prepared carefully for weeks, and completed the exam with tremendous skill. When the results came back, he was surprised to find that he had received a score of 150%. Fearing an error, he called the instructor, saying "I don't want to appear ungrateful for such an outstanding result, but I wondered if there had been an error which needed adjusting." The instructor said, "During the exam, you took the engine apart perfectly, which was worth 50% of the total mark. You put the engine back together again perfectly, which is also worth 50% of the mark." The instructor went on to say, "I gave you an extra 50% because you did all of it through the muffler."

Once the bike is upright again, let it rest as long as you can, so the liquids can run back to where they should be, if they want. Start the bike as for a hot engine.

31 names on the list sounds good. We had 11 at the Wellington overnighter; but it worked.

I've seen Hodas with the stalk lights on. First thing I thought was he had a short circuit! It hasn't really caught on the the M/C design world departments – no one else has followed up on it.

Stayed at the Ohura State Prison Accomodation ( http://www.ohurastateprison.co.nz/index.php?id=1 ) and someone there had done the trip in the last week. I took the Forgotten H'way on that basis. Always a good route! Thanks to responses.
