in reply to: Pokaka 2006 R.A.G. Rally #5794
Great pics Ingel I had almost the same shots from Pokaka but was just too tired to download them on Sunday after my long long ride 😳 (Here’s one you didn’t get) and another which might make one think we were at a car rally not a bike rally.
Actually I'm rather pleased the longest part of the ride was after the weekend otherwise I might have given you a run for the trophy eh. 😉
Malcolmin reply to: Rain-X or similiar, does it work? #5637😀 I’ll third the use of good old Pledge. You can clean the whole outside of the helmet at the same time as waterproofing the outside of the visor. It used to come in liquid form which was good for carrying a small bottle for use on a run but haven’t seen it in anything but aerosol for some time.
Malcolmin reply to: BMW pinlock visor #5453Hi Peter, not quite sure what you mean by “do it yourself” but the fog city works well but does not last well. I have heard of riders buying the insert and drilling out their visors and fitting themselves, so that may be what you are talking about. Otherwise sorry I can’t help.
Malcolmin reply to: Slightly off the beaten track… #5442Hi Wendy, many thanks for the lesson. I am aware of what you say but for the sake of simplicity I used Port Albert as the most likely place to be known to most readers although I realize it (P A) is in fact some way further up the channel. A hard landing would have been a wonderful thing – we paddled home after a hard days paddle to a low tide and had to traverse a hundred metres of thick sticky mud to reach the beach – poor Jean was almost home when she lost her balance and fell 😳 .
Your comments about the tidal flow are so right but you don't mention the bloody little sand fly thingies that swarmed in dense clouds around our heads to the extent that one of our group was getting seriously agitated as there is no escpape when you are in a kayak some distance from the shore. However as soon as a breeze came up they shot through.
Thanks for your comments
Malcolmin reply to: Slightly off the beaten track… #5440Sorry Alex we didn’t stop to take pictures on the road 😥 However just to prove we were there we took a couple on Sunday while we were taking a walk before leaving for home. Once a kid always a kid eh?
A few months ago we did a similar trip to Hargreaves Bay which is a little further south and opposite Port Albert. Had a great time but the property is private and quite remote - tents and all gear required. There used to be a settlement there way back but all that is left is the sad little grave of Emily Hargreave aged 6 just up from the beach in a patch of bush. Emily died in 1860 - boy it was bloody remote back then. The pic of the wagon is looking out to Hargreaves Bay. We put our tents up at the far end of the beach you can just see an old dilapidated caravan.
Malcolmin reply to: Helmet Intercom #4994Hi there Ingel, I don’t use one but there are a lot of members and non members who are using the Baehr system and I haven’t yet heard a negative response. As for cost my only comment would be that I tried a GAP ($100) system many years ago and it created more problems for my wife and I than it solved. Not much use over about 60Kph and fiddly to use. I guess the old addage “you get what you pay for” is very true when dealing with this sort of thing. See the back page of the July newsletter for details.
Good luck
Malcolmin reply to: Ride To Te Akau Wharf #4964😀 Good one Alex, some nice shots. On another topic I’ve tried to have myself logged in remotely by clicking the box supplied but still have to log in each time! what am I doing wrong please?
Malcolmin reply to: Coolant type… #4961Many thanks Dick, that’s just what I was hoping for. I would be interested in the Clymer and will give you a call.
Malcolmin reply to: Coolant type… #4959Further to this AF thing – I had downloaded a page from the “Chain Gang” web site on how to do a coolant change but not yet read it. Just reading through it does in fact give some information. The bottom line states “That’s it. If you do not use Non-Silicate coolant you MAY end up doing the water pump replacement sooner than you should. Not proven, but the GS water pump has failed too, it’s not just a Classic problem.” So I guess the answer is in the “non-silicate” statement.
Malcolmin reply to: Coolant type… #4958So I did the obvious thing and googled 🙄 the bloody thing. Heaps of stuff advertising Nitrite (and just about every other chemical) free AF. Shell do a heavy duty one and I will contact them tomorrow.
Thanks for the help.
Malcolmin reply to: Coolant type… #4957Alex, my owners handbook says “nitrite” not sure if there is a difference, perhaps our chemist members will tell us. I have been a member of the “Chain Gang” for years since owning my first Funduro and it is cerainly a great site with lot’s of useful info – but other than saying to use the ‘red’ anti freeze it gives no other help in identifying which is which.
I've had the left hand side of the psuedo tank off and it is a breeze so I imagine it's the same for the other side.
Malcolmin reply to: Coolant type… #4954It’s for the GS Alex, the current coolant is clear so I want to replace just in case it has gradually be diluted.
Thanks for all the tech stuff Martyn, still not sure which is "nitrate" free but no hurry so I'll persevere. No doubt someone will know. The various types I have seen don't give a lot of technical information but do list some or all of the ingredients. I may have to go to the fount of all information Neil at Experience. 🙂 -
