I have a vague recollection of some of the early R1100 bikes giving problems with the gearbox.  I would also expect that a fix would have been done but with a low milage bike maybe not.  Alan Coombes ex Auckland rides coordinator had problems with his 1100 RT which was a very early one.  I'm sure they eventually changed the gearbox for him.  This web site: http://www.tgibson.dircon.co.uk/probs.html has some info and may be of help.  Good luck.Malcolm

Richard I have had 4 BMW bikes and have never needed a battery tender and most owners I know don't need it as well.

Is this change of mind recent Dean  🙂

I'm astounded!!  😮 where  is your sense of fun? I think it looks great and would certainly be a good ride on or off the seal.  I well remember Phil Scott (ex Motomail ) riding his outfit up the hill (ditch) climb at the Cold Kiwi back in the 80s with some success and a lot of cheering and can throwing 👿  Come on guys get a life. 😉  By the way if you are reading this Garry W I looked for a pic of Phil on his outfit but couldn't find it.  However I came across this and wondered if you remember recording our little trip over the Motu?

Jim I sold mine last year.  I'm pretty sure iit was an 18″ front – spoked as I mentioned earlier but I can't be positive.  When I first got the bike I found the speedo was badly slow and think this is because of the oversize front wheel.  I bought a Panoram cycle computer for the bike and it proved to be excellent and very accurate.

Sorry if that was misleading Jim, mine had one originally but it was removed before I bought it.  The previous owner removed it after it developed a leak and found as I did – the bike was fine without the damper although I wonder if the larger front wheel made it more stable at the front.

The R1100R comes with a steering damper.  Mine didn't have it fitted when I bought it and although I sourced one off Ebay I never fitted it because I found the bike to handle very well without.  The only other difference with mine was that it had spoked wheels which were slightly bigger than the alloys (I think).  Does your bike have a damper and if so is it in good condition?  Good luck.  Malcolm

I live in Auckland & have an Airhead  1990 R100RT.  Although we do have a BMW dealership here, it would appear that understandably, they are more interested in the newer model maintenance & do not work on Airheads.  Thanks

I do not agree that it is understandable, in fact I am amazed to read this and would be interested to hear if you have confirmed for yourself that they do not work on airheads.  Surely a BMW dealer is duty bound to work on any BMW and I would making enquiries from BMW NZ if in fact this proves to be true.Malcolm

Saw this one at Rosalie Bay on the south eastern corner of Great Barrier this weekend.  A beautiful spot. 😎

Hi Bwucie. Where is the horn button on the r1100 ? never bother to use horn on M/C so don't see what all the fuss is about, if someone gets my way I ride round them, it's worked for the last 52 years.     Phil

This post crossed my mind this evening.  I was crossing the Victoria Park Flyover at 4pm today in busy and very wet and windy conditions.  I was in the right hand lane on slick seal with two solid lines of traffic.  A vehicle to my left and slightly in front, one up my chuff and one about 3 seconds directly in front all doing about 80kph.  I sensed the one on the left was about to pull over and sure enough started to pull left and indicator on at the same time!!  Didn't have a clue that I was there and it was a blast on the Siebel that warned him/her  of my position and caused a hasty change of mind .  No chance of riding out of danger and I wasn't going to close the gap to the car in front in those conditions.  The horn is a useful addition to your safety gearfor sure.

Well I guess it depends on your interpretation of “abandoned” Alex.  I'm sure the land is owned by someone – but the building sure looks abandoned and uninhabited.  If you think it's stretching the rules a bit you'd better take it out.  😐

Saw this old place in Coromandel Township a couple of days ago while walking up to Driving Creek.  Also has a good ride up to Port Jackson and Fletchers Bay.  😀 Look out for some bad corrugations on the last stretch to Fletchers and the bloody utes (some towing big boats) coming the other way 😮

Thanks Dean, fortunately it was used on Jean's car first, black's not too bad really eh, for a car anyway.  Good job I didn't use it on the bike - if it's not red it's dead. 😛 Seriously though have a great day tomorrow and if you're on the road take care.  Malcolm and Jeanl
