Thanks guys, as you say Dave a couple either way probably doesn't matter and it's very comfortable at 100 – 105 and has shown 110 + in good conditions but I'm not into thrashing it.  Just musing really in case I want to do an extended ride one of these days  😀  I keep getting restless when I see Alex and the others going off on their forays into the wild.  Yes Alex I've talked to Paul abouth his mates bike - although I haven't seen it as it's stored down south now awaiting it's owners return to complete his trip.  I was chatting to Mark Waters a couple of days ago and he took his DZ 250 to Queenstown and back for a couple of weeks over Easter covering most of the well known trails and tracks between here and there and had a ball.

Almost too complex for this old brain Dave – but after a few reads yes it does add up.  I haven't gotten around to checking the Sherpa specs but I figure you've beaten me to it anyway? The reason for my query was because I was wondering what was a reasonable cruising speed on the little machine over an extended ride so as not to overtax the motor.  I have no idea what the red line is on the bike but I guess it's when the limiter cuts in.  Many thanks for you help.Malcolm

I've had three bikes with ABS and can honestly say I'm not aware of having it activate ever apart from when I did a track day on the GS and John Glaswell had us using it on and off the seal to get a feel for it  😥  Scary stuff first time but was good to see that it worked.  Nice to know it's there if you need it but not a good idea to to throw caution to the wind and expect it to save you.

Pretty bike Russell, my intro to BMW was when a good mate brought an R100 back from Gernamy in the late 70s looked very similar except for the seat and the fact that it was 100.  He left it with me for a couple of weeks while he went to oz and I was hooked.

Agree with all that's been said about voltage etc.  The answer may be to nip down to your friendly pharmacy and buy a $2 tube of “no panic” then you won't need ABS – much cheaper and more effective 👿Good luckMalcolm

Hi Russell, there were plenty of them at the RAG Rally recently, not all from Auckland but a good showing.  I guess they're all out riding eh  😉

Well done Garry, I'm just off to buy some chain lube to keep me going while I consider my other options.  😉

“But back to reality, although you can get bicycles with shaft drive I have yet to see a 250 or 650cc dual-purpose or off-road bike with shaft drive”Now there's a challenge Arne 😀 what do you know about the smallest ever shaft drive?

Thanks Steve and Alex for your input.  Steve I fitted a Scott Oiler to my early model Funduro and after a little bit of experimenting with oil viscosity (with much help from the bonny boys in Scotland) found it to be really good.  However they are a little expensive so might try a cheaper option for the time being.

And while we're talking S**t I'll leave you with this little gem:LITTLE GIRL ON A PLANEA stranger was seated next to a little girl on the airplane when the stranger turned to her and said,'Let's talk. I've heard that flights go quicker if you strike up a conversation with your fellow passenger.' The little girl, who had just opened her book, closed it slowly and said to the stranger, 'What would you like to talk about?' 'Oh, I don't know,' said the stranger. 'How about nuclear power?' and he smiles.OK, ' she said. 'That could be an interesting topic. But let me ask you a question first. A horse, a cow, and a deer all eat the same stuff - grass - . Yet a deer excretes little pellets, while a cow turns out a flat patty, and a horse produces clumps of dried grass. Why do you suppose that is?' The stranger, visibly surprised by the little girl's intelligence, thinks about it and says, 'Hmmm, I have no idea...' To which the little girl replies, 'Do you really feel qualified to discuss nuclear power when you don't know shit?  Good night all.

Yes Bruce, too long in the printing industry at a time when OSH hadn't  been invented has a similar effect on ones digits.

Many thanks for all of your helpful replies guys.  Due to the very restricted and awkward access the drive in type holding the front wheel (Ventura/ Bike Grab) will I think be the best option and I've had a look at one currently on Trademe but unfortunately it is for a road bike and too small for my wheel.  Thanks againMalcolm
