    Thanks for the useful input arty.  BMW don't make a replacement for the fastenings (stainless I think) as they don't expect the wheel to be taken apart.

    OK not entirely sure about the “inside” measurement but the end of the “bolt” protruding from the “nut” is 6mm and the hole where you would put your tool is also 6mm.  Both the nut and bolt are recessed both sides and this hole is 12mm.  Hope that is what you were looking for  :-

    Thanks Gerard, Cortina eh – never owned an old Ford and the Ford I did own was far too technical for my simple skills.If it gets to the point where I decide to do I will remove the tyre first just in case.  I'll wait a while just in case I get some useful info from the Chromeheads.  I had a reply today but the guy sent the wheels away to be done and didn't have any knowledge of how or if.Just putting the new seals in and will refit the very shiny forks later (have to buy some loctite).I'll keep you posted.Malcolm

    Hi Gerard, these should be clearer, they are not the bolts off the carrier rather the bolts that hold the hub to the rim.  There's no problem getting those for disc to carrier or those that hold the carrier to the hub.  But these things!!!!!  I have come across some posts on the Chromehead site where guys have had the whole wheel chromed so I'm assuming it is possible to split the wheel, just not sure though if the fasteners were replaced with something else or just replaced.bbsfastener2.jpgbbswheelfastener.jpg

    OK guys, further to removing the disc and carrier I find that the wheels on the Independent (cast 3 spoke hub bolted to an ali rim with very unusual fasteners is not designed to be taken apart.  I could risk it in the hope that I could find some fasteners that I could replace the originals with but I'm very reluctant to do that at this point.  I'm told the ali rim is most probably anodised and I'm wondering if any of you know anything about sand/bead etc blasting and whether I could mask the hub and have the rim blasted back to bare smooth aluminium, I would then just keep them polished as I will be doing with the front forks.    Pics show rim and hub.  The rim has a flange in the centre about 25mm and the hub overlaps this on the opposite side being bolted through with odd fasteners.  As always advice will be very much appreciated.     It has been said that many members are not able to attend the AGM for reasons of distance/cost etc.  I don't have actual figures to indicate member numbers in each island but let's say there are two thirds in the north and one third in the south.  Out of a total membership of say 500 that's a little ove 300 members in the north island.  In my experience there have rarely been more than 100  and on average I would estimate an average of 75.  Based on these figure I put it that a large portion of the membership are not interested in the running of the club and are happy to take part in local runs and maybe the odd annual rally. Take a look at the numbers attending the annual rally.  How many from the north support the southern rallies? then take a look at how many southern members attend the northern rallies?  If members wanted to travel north they would and I suspect it is not necessarily for reasons of cost.A postal vote is very fair to all members but not necessarily a sensible option. After more than 30 years we are a strong and stable club and while the system may not be perfect it has worked well and should not be changed without serious consideration.

    Many times in the past remits have been put to the membership and after much discussion at the AGM the remit was revised and eventually passed in a revised form.  Presumably this would no longer be able to happen and for me would be a backward step.  The postal vote is certainly fair but unwieldy and not very practical for an organisation such as ours.

    Hi Gerard, thanks for the info it's the practical experience that counts.  The bike in question is not my trusty GS but the C which is currently de registered and sitting on the hoist with the front forks off ready for new seals.  While in this condition I thought I'd clean up the forks and wheel which has some nasty corrosion that requires attention.Hi to Cathy, Malcolm

    The amount of scraping going on makes me think he couldn't fall over anyway, he was balanced on the wheels and floor boards.  However a very smart display, I wonder if Dinger could do that back in the old days – are you awake in the Waikato??

    Take heart in the fact that your other pastime the yak is almost cost free after the initial purchase.  Don't spread this around though otherwise the politicians and bureaucrats will find a way to penalize us quickly enough.

    I'm not sure if you're term “filtering” is what I would call lane splitting or not but assuming it is I can say that many years ago when I was commuting from the north shore to Auckland city on the motorway I was pulled in for lane splitting by a very reasonable officer of the constabulary on a bike just like mine only white.  He explained that if I was moving between two lanes of moving traffic in marked lanes at a faster speed than the traffic I was “overtaking” so must be between the car on my left and the white line.  If I  moved over the white line so that the line was on my left and the car on the right then I would be deemed to be undertaking and would be breaking the law.  I still don't know if this was just a very reasonable cop or actually the law but it made sense and I never got pulled up again.

    Well done Darryl.  I was always a little unsure whether it should have been me or you getting the trophy back in 1996 but I guess I shouted loudest eh  ;).  I've just done a google search and as close as I can tell we were both 1488 ks so it could have been either – ah well them's the breaks.  Anyway I'm thrilled to hear you've finally nailed it and can now retire. brassy.jpg

    That's good to hear Shah, it never ceases to amaze me how some will find the most amazing reasons for avoiding blame – “it's your fault, you shouldn't have parked there” is a classic.

    Sounds like you all had a good time, I couldnt make it to see the Gee Gees due to the arrival of our 3rd Granddaughter at 0012hrs on Sunday morning.   ;D
