in reply to: Whangamomona and Fisher’s track Adv. Ride #11589
Chateau to Plateau is mainly road bikes so dessert storm won't dwindle the numbers by much. Have you decided which way you are coming into the Naki yet Alex. I have notified the border patrols and all the snipers have been stood down 😀 At present it is raining, Whanga Rd (for those who dont know) is a papa track. Papa has two surfaces, "DRY" which means harder than concrete, and "WET" which means woooooobaby 😮My bike is in bits at the moment Alex, not sure when the beast will be fired up again but will let you know if it is before Saturday.
in reply to: Whangamomona and Fisher’s track Adv. Ride #1158125th is the Chateau to Plateau Road Ride. Likely to be hundreds of Bikes in Whanga for lunch that day and some of them wont be riders you want to ride with 🙄 If you plan on staying at Awakino you are looking at a reasonably big day to do the Whanga Rd then Fishers Track plus ride home to Auckland. Not impossible but a big day out 😀As a suggestion you could come off the Marakopa Rd (Mangatoa Rd to use its proper name) via the Pomarangai Rd, Waitangaruru Rd, Pungerehu Rd then Mairoa Rd to Pio Pio. From there down to Aria then Ohura. Leaves you the option of going thru to Fishers track first then stay at Owhango or somewhere like that. Go with the flow of bikes the next day (25th) and do the Whanga Rd. Leaves you a few options for going home also. Either out through Purangi, Tarata. Over Mt Damper or the Waitaanga's.
in reply to: Funny noise in a 1200RT #11561Told ya so 😀 If it happens again get the injectors checked. Could be a leaky one. Mean time ride and smile 😀
in reply to: Whangamomona and Fisher’s track Adv. Ride #11575I have recieved word that the Whanga Rd is passable “JUST” A large slip has come down in the region of the second bridge. This being the bridge at the Auhotuia end. Apparently there is a huge amount overhanging the slip and the advice is ride quickly and dont look up. Take an observer and go 😀Hope that helps Alex 😀
in reply to: Funny noise in a 1200RT #11559You have experienced an ignition malfunction 😀 Loud bang like shotgun would be backfire. wheezing is old age 😮 or compression by pass. Take 2 Asprin and put the bike on a trailer then proceed to the Doctors 😉
in reply to: Whangamomona and Fisher’s track Adv. Ride #11573Any thoughts on which way you are coming into Taranaki Alex? I may be keen to join you for some of the ride
in reply to: Intermittent ignition – R850R 1999 #11512I am with gerard on this one. My 1100 used to just give up and stop. Turn the key off, turn it on, fire her up and ride away 😕 Came right for 4 months then gave up for good a while back. I had been down the water track, in fact I pulled nearly the entire loom out and went thru with contact cleaner, reassembled everything with super expesive electrical grease, sprayed all the connections with Silicone. You name it I did it. Then I heard about and replaced the hall sensors and bingo, reliable german thing 😀
last I heard the Old Whanga Rd was closed by a large slip. Havent heard of it reopening yet. May pay to check it out.I went in from the Whanga end a month ago and got thru both Tunnels but after spending 3/4 of an hour digging a german machine out of a bog hole turned back at the next bog!!
in reply to: Summer road conditions. #11416http://continuingeducation.construction.com/article.php?L=51&C=201&P=5Ah when will we learn to use the knowledge others have collected for us. Incorrectly installed Tyvek, New Zealands next housing time bomb, (coming to a house near you soon) Perhaps we could use the cheap melting tar from the roads to water proof our houses.
in reply to: 97.5 Octane Fuel #11424My understanding of lead in fuel was that it was a cheap way to boost the octane rating. It also served as a lubricant for the valves. However with the advent of modern technology (I think thats how to spell that word) the valve seats and faces are far superior to the days of a valve grind every 30000 mls 😮 Also oils etc have all improved. I know that when LPG and CNG first came to NZ the same arguements and issues arose. The falcon 4.1 engines valves dissapeared so far into the head the auto adjusters gave up!!However as stated these issues dont exist with modern engines (much) However new issues arise with Fuel injection systems with gum forming (thats a nice word for shit) and "o" rings perishing or deforming as a result of incompatibilty with fuel additives.A rule of thumb I live byIf it was any good the Manufacturer would add it in the first place 😀If its in there its ok 😀If its in there and its not ok then the people who put it in are legally required to repair the problemsTime for a cup of tea lads 😀
in reply to: Does anybody has GSP Tracks for Garmin? #11217http://advroutes.org.nz/This guy has a few tracks on this site.
Now you have really confused me 😕 When people ask do the pistons come together at the same time I have always answered yes. Now one animation shows this while one shows that they move in the same direction 🙄 My life is full of confusion, I may have to buy a single banger 😀
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10918Hi KokopelliI am still in but I only have the standard Dakar tyres not knobblies. Perhaps i will come along and see how I fair and turn around if it gets too bad. I can then meet you somewhere on the other side? What are your feelings, i dont want to hold every-one up
Let's see how we go. It's not a huge distance to cover. I guess over the 42km there will be a couple of bits that are a bit tricky, but the four of us should be able to get it through. It also depends on your riding experience. Come along, have a look what the track is like. If it's not for you, you can turn around and meet us back at Owhango, that's were the track comes out again. If we're lucky it will be dry anyway. The guy you may have seen struggling on the KTM Adventure has only just bought the bike and has no prior big bike experience. He had a DR650 before. The Dakar doesn't have the low front mudguard either.Pinched from Kiwirider, on the same ride around Whanga
If you look at the pic you will notice to heads on the Dakar. Yes he was two up. Rode past me as I was bogged to the eyeballs two feet of the end of the concrete bridge then dissapeared up the track 😳
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10878Sounds like this could be a lot of fun Alex. After looking at the vids I might wait until I have a few more off road Ks under my belt before I have a bash at it. Still thinking of the TTTTT. depends on this weekend. Off to the Warriors (Seats in the Grandstand yeehaa). So may have to do penance next weekend.I can think of 13 tunnels (If you start at Waikawau). I have been told there is 26!!! If I dont make it can you keep a count for us Aslan and let us know 😀
in reply to: Enforcement wish list #10525I was agreeing with you Koko 😀 Part of my job requires me to resit part of my licence every five years, I have to undergo a medical every time I renew my “lifetime' licence (yeah right) plus the company I work for put me through an driving assessment every 12 months and a medical a darn sight more rigorous than the one to gummint require. :-D. So I have done my bit Steve 😀 ………………………
