in reply to: Motu Rd tame Adventure ride September 25 & 26 #14127Alex, are we starting from BP Papakura Saturday morning? I wonder if there's any interest in getting part way down Friday pm?
in reply to: Motu Rd tame Adventure ride September 25 & 26 #14124Yep, no 42nd traverse stuff. There will be one or two small creeks to ride through.
OK, I prefer to use the panniers if there's no heavy track stuff involved. I bought them, so I may as well use them.
in reply to: Motu Rd tame Adventure ride September 25 & 26 #14119Alex, am I right in thinking this will mainly be metal and tar roads – no 42nd type stuff? Just thinking of the 'baggage'.
in reply to: Motu Rd tame Adventure ride September 25 & 26 #14118As I don't know the area, I am neutral – be good to fit in Gisborne though. I don't mind paying a bit more for a place with decent food and a good bed. Looking forward to it.
in reply to: Motu Rd tame Adventure ride September 25 & 26 #14115This looks good. Count me in. I haven't been out that direction on the bike but I've done Waikaremoana in the 4WD. I like to see as much as possible so I am up for the longer ride.
Okay, I admit it, the stone forecast made me chuckle 😀
in reply to: Waitemata MCC Trail ride #12756Not so hard really. I didn't even find the Waitemata crowd. I rode the metal roads in the Rodney hills in almost constant heavy rain for a couple of hours before making my way to Woodhill and the trail park. I went on to the beach, got stuck and had to be pulled out by a 4WD driver. I did enjoy it – in a masochistic sort of way. The BMW gear was great. The GSA is fabulous but I definitely need a true trail bike to enjoy those sort of trails and beaches - especially on my own. When I lived in Dubai, I joined a guided ride into the desert on a Honda XR400. That was fantastic. You had to keep the speed up and if you did it was more like skiing than riding. Soon as we lost speed we were in trouble. I was very impressed with the XR400 although as confidence grew during the day, I began to think it was a little under powered. I guess the newer versions have plenty of guts.
in reply to: A few pictures from the weekend’s adventure ride #12791Vids are good. Give a better sense of what it was like – although camera angled up or down slopes makes them look easier than they are.
in reply to: Ride to Whangarei #12758Nice photos Alex. Thanks for showig me the way back over the metal and thanks to Dave for leading the way up.
in reply to: Adventure Ride to 42nd Traverse and Fishers track #12673... Peter take care on the Adventure thru the 42nd it will be tough going on the big bike if it gets wet.
Good luck with the move. I learned the hard way how tough the 42nd can be when I went through it with Alex and others several months back. I was black and blue for weeks from one drop on the way in. Linda might yet be off to UK to see our younger daughter before she leaves for her first tour in Afghanistan with UK Army. If she does go, I might have to miss it this time as can't leave youngest on his own. 😕Maybe see y'all on trip to Whangarei tomorrow?
in reply to: Adventure Ride to 42nd Traverse and Fishers track #12656Alex, I note [and understand – I think] your comment about avoiding bigger bikes but I've written a note on the Advrider thread to check the general feeling. I am sure I can't be the only one who has only one bike – and bought it as the best all rounder. I agree it's not ideal for tracks like the 42nd but for me that's all part of the challenge 👿
in reply to: AKL Sept.6 Lunch ride to Karioitahi Beach #12625Some nice rides out there but already done a lot of them. I've been doing most of my hang gliding training on that beach and I usually travel on the GSA – that's me using the hang glider on the cover of the Aucklander last week].I see the register did Franklin district a couple of weeks ago. I toured that on my own after a cancelled lesson a few week back. Fantastic scenery so close to Akl. I would love to do some of the more tricky tracks but need at least a couple of other riders.BTW, I went out to Whatipu last weekend. That looks to have some interesting tracks as well.
in reply to: Auckland – Opononi – Russell – Auckland #12512Looks like a great trip Alex. I'll keep it in mind for when the weather is better. 😀
in reply to: King Country Adventure ride (Kiwibiker) #11977OK Alex. See you there. Peter
