in reply to: Headlight bulbs #14757

The HP2 blows front bulbs like clockwork, every 6 months almost to the day ??? I buy double packs, keep a spare wrapped up in the tool kit and can live with $90 per annum. The tail light use to blow all the time as well, but since I've fitted the LED tail piece I've not had a problem since. Most likely is an issue related to the CanBus system, but hard to say when the majority of riding is on rough terrain, but I never used to blow bulbs on the Dakar. An LED headlight would do the trick, I'm just waiting  😉

any one know definitively if my old 2003 R1150RT is OK to trickle charge back through power outlet as I have purchsed an expensive genuine BMW plug to suit the socket. Is there alternative Dick Smith type equivalent plugs and anyone know description/spec/part number? Apparently it is not the same as a car lighter. I have not bothered checking yet.Cheers 🙂

CanBus was introduced from '04 models, so you're fine charging your RT though a power socket using any old charger. Bosch do equivalent plugs for the BMW power sockets and you can get from most auto-electricians or outlets like Dick Smith, Repco, etc.

From your description, it is most likely the clutch slave cylinder and it would explain the stiff action of the clutch…o-ring gone. Try a clutch fluid flush first…easy to do…make sure you use a good quality clutch fluid then change entirely every two years on your Rockster, as per the service schedule.

SH 35 is the only significant road around the cape and connects the significant settlements and all the side roads, some of which are gravel. To access the East Cape Lighthouse take East Coast Rd from Te Araroa, some of that is gravel too but worth a look. Fuel can be hard to come by between Opotiki and Gisborne, fill up either end to be sure. There are some general stores on SH35 that provide basic fuel - for a premium price!Mind the tourists (and the locals), many don't understand why there's a centre line.Have fun, it's a great trip.

Probable use will be 70 % highway 30 % off road /quote] Don't go with knobs then, 70% road use will wear them out quicker than you need/want to and, as has been said, TKCs or anything equivalent are not cheap.Mitas or Heidenau would suit. I get round the Wairarapa quite a bit on a set of Conti Trail Attacks, last for ages and brilliant on the road.

Can I feel okay about not enjoying off roading when it's so obviously what so many people with GSs love?

Yes, you can. The GS is a great road bike, many a GSX and the like rider has found that out as a GS scoots around the outside of them up the Rimutkaka Hill  😉Does that mean you're not coming on the GS ride then  😛

Thanks Malcolm, it's going to be truly epic!A few of you have been very generous so far but anyone else out there struggling to think what to do with their tax cut, here's an option 🙂 I've set up a web page at http://www.fundraiseonline.co.nz/GarryWilliams/ so that you can easily and securely donate funds to this charity.Well a couple of wee's until we kick this off, here's to where things are at:

    • We have 28 Confirmed Riders (please complete the Confirmed Riders Register on the blogsite if you're planning on coming) 16 Riders are starting at Cape Reinga 7 Riders are staring at Picton 14 Riders are joining us in Napier 22 Riders are finishing in Invercargill (I trust you have booked your Burt Munro Tickets) 14 Riders are doing the whole trip (that’s around 4,000 ks) $4,685 has been raised for the Westpac Rescue Helicopter Service (surely we can do better than that!)

Kerry up at MSW (Motorcycle Safety Wear) in Khyber Pass is good Daffy. She's done some great work on my riding gear as far back as when I worked at Motomail in the late 90s. You send what you need done to her, she does it and sends it back in good time and at a good price in my view. Give her a ring on (09) 309 9522, check out her website http://www.msw.co.nz/

Go for it. I've had a Rallye Pro 3 for about a month now and it's wicked. The Rallye 1 worn for the last 4 years or so wasn't that bad either so a 2 must also be good, if you get my drift  😀

    “rage” is german for rag

"brake" must also be German for clutch  😕

MikeRTs came with System panniers included so I'm assuming you mean the bit missing is part of the moulded rocker panel set.The photo will confirm and the part numbers for either the full set or parts for each side are included. Use these to order what you need from your local dealer.SystemPannierbits.jpg

MikeTake the wheel off and dunk it in water to check for leaks. Wait until the wife's out and use the bath  😆There's only a problem if there is then no obvious leak, but at least you'll be sure it's not a tiny puncture.Tyres on nicked or bent rims will retain air during warm weather, but often leak in lower temperatures. Effective psi loss of 1 lb. per 10 degrees drop in temp is normal, regardless of any other problems. If you have alloy wheels, what can happen over time is that the piant/laquer starts to peel from the wheel itself and the air actually leaks between the laquer and the wheel. Take the tyre off the rim and clean the bead and the lip of the wheel up.If the tyre/rim bond is compromised, usually from hitting a pothole a bit hard, you'll lose a few psi each night. Solution in this case is also to take the tyre off, buff and polish the rim and refit.Otherwise, chuck a tube in and see if that sorts it.CheersGarry
