WCC must have known they’d be picking a scrap. Councillor Pepperill was pleased to inform us today that the proposed $1 per hour parking fee had been voted off the Council agenda and he thanked the many people who responded. So a good result.
in reply to: How staunch are you? #5771Ha ha, looks like great fun 😀 But, picture quality aside, is it as staunch as this?
in reply to: 5 Rivers Adventure #5761For sure Alex, its going to be a great day and John Forsyth will put together a good route I’m sure. Also thinking I’ll try and get up to Mike Britton’s Far North “Thumper” in May, should be a good 5-day ride and suspect will be much the same type of thing as the BMW Safari. I’ve not spent a lot of time up that way since we moved from Kerekeri, mind you when it gets wet – it gets really wet.

Ouch, I was waiting for that. Nasty episode in Hawkes Bay, and now word is OSH is looking at prosecuting the organisers of the ride for this. Things that make you go mmmmm..........in reply to: Westpac Rescue Helicopter Charity Ride #5737Having had first hand experience of the way many people drive these poxy 4x4s these days, it may be more appropriate to calculate the height of the pile-up 😕
in reply to: Westpac Rescue Helicopter Charity Ride #5735I heard the queue was around 5K long and around $11K donated to the Trust, good stuff!!
in reply to: The Long Way North, and other adventures #5733Fabulous story Tony, my sympathies for the dramatic ending though, not good!!
90-mile beach is a bit of a misnomer. Some think it was named due to the practise of rearing cows at the north end of the beach. There were many settlers arriving in the south engaging in the harvest of Kauri sap, liquid gold in them days. To feed these ravenous ramblers, the cows had to be walked from the top to the bottom of the beach. As we all know, cows travel 30 miles per day. The trip took 3 days. You do the math. As it happens the beach is actually about 64 miled long, so your speedo isn't far off 😀
As it happens 90-mile beach, Te Wharo-oneroa-a-Tohe, is named after Tohe, one of the descendants of the famed explorer Kupe. He came to Hokianga and later returned to Hawaiki. Many place names in the Far North record the gardens or actions of Kupe during his time there.
Here's to a speedy recovery and I hope you're up to many more adventures soon.in reply to: Akatarawa Forest Traverse – Sat 21 Jan 06 #5681Great pics Stephen. Enjoyed the company and you’re right, the grin factor is very high 😀 Outstanding trail, great scenery, not too crowded and just technical enough to keep you on your toes. Look forward to the next one.
in reply to: Rain-X or similiar, does it work? #5633Most Caltex service stations sell Rain-X. Repco, Super Cheap and those other auto accessory outlets all have it down here.
in reply to: Rain-X or similiar, does it work? #5629No worries Alex. Once you’re South of the Bombays your chance of rain should be much slimmer and you shouldn’t have to play that guessing game for too long. Not entirely sure if we’re making it to the rally. If you’re passing by our way (and of course you’d try Vinegar Hill then come down the Eastern flank and take on the Rimutaka Hill road just for fun) do drop in for beverage and a chat, we’ve spare room if you need it. Merry Christmas, all the best for a happy, safe and prosperous New Year.
All the best.in reply to: wairarapa pics – gladstone scarecrows #5579Reign it in mate!! The scarecrows are much better looking 😀
in reply to: Rain-X or similiar, does it work? #5627Hi Alex. Rain-X is great and quite cost effective if used correctly, but only on the outside of the visor. Of course you need more in Auckland!!
in reply to: hinakura pub #5552And here I was looking forward to the scarecrow photos. Was a good day, let’s do it again soon Steve.
