Dave,My R1100RT is now up to 86K and running fine.  I have done close to 40,000Km in the last 20 month s. I get to serviced regularly and clean it often.  It runs well and is THE most reliable machine I have owned.  As Alex says, service history and state of the bike is important.  All the best. 😎

Mike,I did order the LED tail lights but received an email that they would not export the product. Dear me itś such complicated technology.  I gave up at this stage.  I have new source of standard tail light bulbs - Repco, I have had one in for over 6 months and itś working fine.  I noticed following and RT during the Wellington ride to Lake Ferry on Sunday that itś tail light was integrated into the GIVI top box.  It looked great.  The LEDS on jap bikes look good to and can be seen from quite a distance.  I am looking for but have not yet found a plugable LED system for my taillight; it is actually quite small.  If I find something I will let you know.Cheers 😎

Gary and Tracy,I visited Repco in Johnsonville on the way home on Friday and bought the brightest white lamp I could, and put it in over the weekend.  WHAT A DIFFERENCE!  I would be happy to hoon off to Taupo now in the dead of night and not have to guess where the road led.  I will put a couple in the car too.  Thanks a lot to you both.Cheers  😀 😀 😀

Gary,Thanks for this good idea.  I have raised my headlight just enough not to annoy cars.  This morning I had a dark road to my self and as I have said, the 'standard' light is just adequate.  As Tracy says as we are in the depths of winter these lights become important.  By the way i have ordered some LED running lights for my tail-light.  I will let you know how they are.Cheers  😎

Thanks Tracy,That sounds like a good idea.  I have now found higher wattage H4 bulbs but I am not sure that's the best solution.  I will take a trip to repco.Cheers 😎

Hi Dick.Thanks.  I went to the Paraparam shop when I last relpaced the headlight and they told me there was none with higher wattage.  I will go back and look for myself!Cheers 😎

Mike,I have Conti Road Attacks on both from and rear.  They transformed my bike.  A recent trip into the South Island proved their worth.Regards 😎

John,I too have wondered about the range my R1100RT.  According to my handbook, the tank capacity is 25 litres.  Given while commuting I get about 20 Kms to the litre I should get 500 kms per tank.  My maiximum distance it 428 Kms using 21.57 therefore there should be about 4 litres left and 80 kms!.  At this time the light had been on a while and I was down to one bar on the fuel gauge.  I have wondered at times if my tank is the volume the hand book says  given the numbers above. I am off on a trip to Christchurch the week before Easter and i will have a good change to test it on reasonable open road running. In any event, the RT goes a really long way on a tank compared to some of the other machines I have riden.Cheers 🙂

This is becoming really interesting.  I generally buy from the place where I have got to know the folks.  That's generally Shell.  As for fuel consumption and brands.  My mini test reveals not much, diddly squat actually.Shell with Vpower, last 4 tanks average 4.90.  Last 4 tanks with Caltex and Techron 4.94.  Actually, my bike does about 20 Kms per litre, whatever fuel I use: that's the way I see it. I am off the Christchurch and beyond next month so I will be interested how it will perform then.BIODIESEL  this stuff doesn't have the same calorific value as normal diesel, in fact I have read it's about .98 of the standard stuff.  That will explain the loss of power.  Cheers

Mike,So far I have used one full tank of Caltex with Techron. the result was 4.92 l/100km.  Before that, with Shell VPower I did 4.94 l/100km,  I am not sure fuel efficiency is all in the fuel itself.  If I take my bike on a Sunday ride, the consumption goes over 5 as I tend to ride harder and have lots more fun. I have had our Merc drinking at 15 l/100 km, 😀 then again it can do 8  :|.  It's nearly all in the way you drive.  However, something that can keep the innards of your engine clean can't be bad.  In the wider scheme of things having a buzz on a bike that's using only a tenth of the fuel a V8 would getting a somewhat inferior buzz, can't be a bad thing.I will try out Caltex for three more tank and see what I get.Cheers  😎

Hi Mike,One of my cars is a Merc Sportline of '92 vintage.  I am registered on a site called benzworld to keep up to date with solving the issues the car may develop.  It seems to me a lot of users in the USA have BMW bikes as well as Mercs and many of them swear by Techron, they get it from Chevron.  I keep regular fuel stats on my bike but not on the type of fuel.  The type of fuel I use is often decided by any loyalty card or handout from the supermarket. I use my bike for commuting so my trips are pretty well defined so, in the light of your information I will try out my local Caltex place with Techron and see if there is any advantage.CheersMike

Kurt,Thanks for the brief view of Sweden, it brought back some pleasant memories as I was in Vasteras(My spelling may be wrong here) July to October 1979 working wth ASEA; Oh so long ago.  My one liner about Sweden is: thousands of lakes and millions of trees. Best regards 😎

I took Dick's advice and purchased the handle bar lifters.  They arrived within a week and are now fitted to my RT.  The modification is worth it from my point of view, I sit up straighter, it feels more relaxing, and it is easier to 'relax' my elbows when I encounter any of the may bumps on my way.  Cheers 😎
