What do you mean proper Police not like Traffic! We're very lucky here in NZ that Traffic Policing isn't taken too seriously …

Excuse me!Northland police take themselves very seriously, thank you very much.At least if I got a "producer" from plod in the UK I knew that he was trained to a far higher standard of driving than I could afford to train myself to.... BTW when is Mr Bell expected back from his hols?  ... cat's and pigeons and all that 😀

Tourances aren't the cheapest of options, but they work for me.

in reply to: R100GS switch gear #7030

I could be wrong, and it wouldn’t be the first time, but my understanding is that the older GS’s had “conventional left thumb switch gear. However, the PD GS’s had “BMW switch gear, and I think Basic’s like Alex’s are the exception that proves the rule.Certainly, my 1991 80 GS has the same left thumb indicators and switchgear as the trademe bike.I hope that helps

When I bought my GS, it had had the K100 front callipers fitted.

Yup, that's an option too.  Or should it be option 2 …  😀The way things stand, I'm not going to be ordering the fancy CNC machined part that I would have liked, as the numbers don't stack up at this stage.I'll make some further enquiries about the K bike callipers, and I've also read that callipers off some of the later R bikes fit with a little work.Cheers for nowJohn

After having spent an evening with emmby aka Mike on Friday, I would strongly suggest that you offer the guy a cup of tea whilst he's passing through, or better yet a roof over his head for the night on his travels. The last I heard, his plans were mostly North Island with a possible sprint round the Marlborough Sounds.Damn decent bloke if you ask me, not that anybody has 😀CheersJohn

Hi Tharon, there a pretty full write up on the gizmo here ... along with a warning about not using them on bikes that are still covered by Warrantee.http://www.ukgser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80830

No problem Tharon,It did cross my mind that they might make a suitable Xmas gift for a biker bloke (or bird), even if you had to go and get one for yourself 😀

What can I say 😕 If BMW wanted to do that on the bikes, then they would have done so. 😉Maybe going on an advance rider course can also be the difference on braking techniques.

Thanks for the comments Tharon,I think that if you look at the front of your bike you'll find that BMW actually did do something about the brakes, when they opted for twin large diameter rotors and 4 pot callipers. Also, whilst I respect that rider training can be invaluable where braking technique is concerned, I think that the best advice that an experienced trainer could offer to the rider of an airhead GS would be to eat more spinach and develop biceps like Popeye 😀Besides, wasn't it you that started the thread here about modifications 😉Seriously though, there is a lot of talk on various websites regarding the braking capabilities of these bikes, and offering suggestions on how to improve matters.  The options range from the cheap and cheerful suggestions such as this, to the Lotto winners HPN style conversions. For what it's worth, I think that the benefit of this conversion is that 4 callipers offer a far greater bearing surface on the back of the brake pad when compared with the standard 2 pot Brembo's.  Therefore the breaking force is transferred more effectively.  Also, the modification is cheap and it's reversible.Anyway, ... Steve, It was good to meet up with you at the weekend, and I'm pleased you had a good time up here.  Alex, I'll keep you posted with how things develop on the pricing when you stray up this way over the holidays.RegardsJohn

I've just replaced the battery on the 80, and after a lot of reading and phoning, I've gone for a Panasonic LC-X1220P.At $140 for the Panasonic, compared with $400 for the Odyssey it seemed like a no-brainer to me.+ 1 for the Gel battery

Talking about HP2, what about this one? 😀

Hummm ... I've been lusting after it as well, but I do think that it would look infinitely better if they got rid of the dustbin on the side, and went for a pukka twin pipe system and underseat exhaust.Having said that, if it came like that, straight from the factory, what would uncle Remus (et al) be able to tempt us with ...

…  I'm thinking about buying an 12 volt oil pump to do oil changes in the car.  …

At the risk of getting this tread back onto the original topic, I must say that changing the oil without removing the sump plug really does sound like a No 8 fencing wire kind of bodge. You’ve got no way of finding out what nasties may be lurking in the sump, and if you don’t care what’s in the sump, then why bother changing the oil at all … 😮+1 for the AA 😀

If you are going to be in the area, it'd be rude not to catch up and have a run out somewhere.Besides, even the run down to Hihi should provide a few photo ops' that will sicken my mates in the UK.
