in reply to: Power Plug?? #7749
Is there somewhere I can buy one of these plugs? …
Hi Scott,Off the top of my head I can think of two places that you can get the plugs and sockets.Firstly, you could go to your friendly BM dealer ... 😮Or you can get them from GOOD auto part dealers (forget Repco!). Aparently they are a standard Hella part, and there are lots of Hella pattern parts availible too.If Tony S (the turn-coat 😉 ) shows his face, he sourced them in NZ I believe. I got my spares from a mate who worked at the Komatsu earth mover plant in the UK.I hope that helps.
in reply to: Ewan and Charlie to Undertake the ‘Long Way Down #7716I'll look forward to that one! …
Hmmm ... I'm not so sure. With every episode I saw of the long way round, my opinion of Mr. McGregor went down and down.On the other hand, Charlie Borman strikes me as the sort of bloke that you could happily invite into your shed, stand around drinking beer, kicking tyres and and talking bikes.I'll place a small wager now that it'll end up being some sort of UNICEF Ambasador Aprentiship scheme for McGregor.... all that said, when it does reach the small screen I'll watch the Namibia section with a great deal of envy.
in reply to: Are cycle spedo’s legal? #7655Johnny Johnny Johnny next time u wont to no an answer like this go straight to the “Organ Grinder” …
Cheers for that Steve ... even if it was slightly uncharitable to ‘yer fellow BM owners 😉Right then, short term fix is going to be a cheapie cycle computer, even if I need to rig up an additional light to get the WoF. I’m thinking of a $5 head torch from Mitre 10.Long term fix is going to be one of the flashy Vapor units with inbuilt clock, rev counter, and the all important two stage lights to tell you when to change gear. Yes, I am kiddingHowever, I would like to exercise the little grey cells, and try to work out if it’s possible to take the speed reading from the existing spedo drive cable rather than from the front wheel. Basically, make the thing look like it’s always been there rather than the No. 8 fencing wire bodge that it truly is … but that's a job for another day.As for the spedo accuracy problem Mr. T, I've been using my GPS for that for a while now, because it gives me the option of finding out just how lost I've managed to get myself, and also how quickly was travelling when I passed the turn off that I should have taken.… oh, and I will get in touch with your mate CB, just to find out what the options are for repairing/replacing the original, because it would be nice to have the option of returning the bike to stock condition at some stage down the track. Many thanks all ... 😎
in reply to: Are cycle spedo’s legal? #7642Thanks Alex,If you can get a straight answer from someone at a testing station it would be good.Obviously, if a basic cycle computer would pass a WoF it would allow me some time to be that much more ... creative when it comes to conecting a more sophisticated device like the Vapor. If they don't satisfy the requirements of a WoF, I'll see what Cruiserboy's mate can come up with.Either way, I'll keep you all posted.
in reply to: Are cycle spedo’s legal? #7640Tony, this is all well and good, but I'd be grateful if somebody from these parts could actually give me an answer about if any of these things would pass a WoF … 😀... and at the risk of hijacking my own thread.Trail tech do a “dashboard” option for the Vapor, but as it stands it only has space for 4 warning lights, and I'd want the minimum of five. What might be worth investigating is using one of the trail tech ATV dashboard mount options. The another alternative seems to be the Acewell range, as they carry up to 6 warning lights but they are more expensive, and aren't anywhere near as tidy as the trail tech option. Well, not in my opinion anyway.Back to the topic ... are they legal?
in reply to: Are cycle spedo’s legal? #7638Cheers CB, PM sent. However I've just been looking at the trail tech website, and the vapor computer looks way sexier (and cheaper) than the touratech option. For some reason, the hight tech spedo seems to me like a wonderful counterpoint to the ultimate simplicity of the 80.Is it too early to start my Christmas list ... 😀
in reply to: Got rearended this morning #7347I really do not miss the Auckland traffic one little bit.As Jim said, I'm glad it's only the machinery, and not you that's damaged.
in reply to: Ceramic exhaust coatings #7277Thanks Alex,I've seen the website before, and it certainly looks like the sort of thing I'm after, but I was interested to know if anybody had any first hand experience of the ceramic coatings. If not, I might have to volunteer the 1150 to act as Guinea Pig. The good thing is that the prices seem to be reasonable when compared with what I've seen quoted on other forums.Â
Was it Belgian registered and Graphitan (submarine grey) by any chance?I do recall seeing an 1150 with a modified tank in town not so long ago.It looked like the tank had been sliced open around the bottom of the frontal lobe area and then flared out to increase the capacity. As you say Jim, it did look like a very nice job, and not like anything that I've seen before.
in reply to: Accommodation recommendations please #7162Well, that was a grand weekend, all in all.The meeting on Friday finished earlier than I'd hoped, so I made it to Whitianga on Friday evening, Roturua on Saturday, and home on Sunday. However, I must be getting soft because I'm still shattered after the 500 k sprint up north on Sunday.Saw a few guys out there on BM's over the weekend, so if you got a wave from a bloke on a filthy 1150 GS with Givi side cases, it would have been me.
in reply to: Replacement battery for bike. #6544So how long do these batteries last? …
I was talking to Sebastian at Experience on Friday about this very subject. He seemed to think that a gel battery with a tender could last anything up to 8 years in balmy North Island conditions, but 4 years is good going after European (or Otago) cold winter starts.
in reply to: Accommodation recommendations please #7160Thanks Alex,Kariotahi Beach looks like it might fit the bill.Rugged, eh? That's a new one on me 😀If it was filthy dirty and more than a little rough round the edges, then yes it was mine. Unfortunately, the electrics packed up on Mike the American just as he was heading back north, so it hasn't been cleaned since he started his road trip.On the subject of heading back north, I was planning to do the trip up on Sunday. I've got all day to do the trip, so it shouldn't be too stressful.
in reply to: New model R1200GS #7143… from the factory …
So you agree that it's a marketing ploy.
in reply to: New model R1200GS #7139… Again, it's not like you going to hit anything with them eh?
You want a bet? … and DAMHIK … 😉However, to get back to Jim's question, you've got to ask ... Why?Is an Explorer slightly less adventurous than an Adventure, but “braverâ€? than a standard GS?Hopefully it'll be a marketing success, because when it falls out of fashion I'll be able to replace my 1150 GS with a 1200 GS for sensible money. 😀
in reply to: New BMW?????? #7113It's an interesting concept, but I can't see too many BMW owners pineing for one, on the other hand it might appeal to some splinter group.BTW ... is that a trellis frame?... in the words of a UK comedy series ... "I'll get 'me coat" 😀
