in reply to: Accommodation in Christchurch #14598
Well, I finally got confirmation on the contract last night, and thanks to someone here on the BMWOR I think I've got some accommodation sorted. Many thanks ... 8)John
in reply to: The GS thing……..does anyone else not get it? #14409you forgot to mention the most important thing"I am Pom"and amazingly I have never heard you whinge. A model of this breed not found. ::) (forgot to put in the word often) after found
Pom: Yeah, guilty as charged, but more that that, I'm also a Paki Pākehā, and they've got to be even less common that a non whinging Pom.Whinging and whining: Na, not my style. Ranting on the other hand ... well, just mention a subject and pass me that soap box ... 😉
in reply to: The GS thing……..does anyone else not get it? #14407I suppose I should chime in with another take on the GS thing, seeing as I've got a couple.Basically I bought the 1150 because the riding position suits my back, simple as that.Others here have mentioned about the bike's ability to carve the corners and yes, I've actually had a blast taking the beast around Pukekohe awhile back.I've also done the two-up long distance touring thing with a couple of 11 hour days in the saddle and the ex asleep behind me for part of the time. However, knowing my own limitations there's no way I would dream of taking the thing further off road than well graded gravel, but I've met a few who do, regularly.Others have mentioned the gearing on the 1150, and mine has the "economy" 6th gear, which means that the bike will barely pull in 6th at legal speeds. This wasn't a problem in the UK or Europe as speeds are generally higher, but with the attitude of law enforcement here in NZ I'm seriously considering fitting a shorter final drive, and rather than the 1100 unit I'm actually considering going the whole hog the final drive from an 850 GS.When it comes to the 80, well ... it's a modern classic IMO, however I didn't buy it with any delusions of taking it off road. Off the tar seal, yes, but more than that, no way.I suppose what I'm getting at is that there are some of us with GS's that don't consider ourselves or our bikes to be full on adventurers, just very capable machines in a range of roles. My name is John, and I own a GS (or two) ... ;D
in reply to: Back to the fold … #14566Just make sure you don't disturb the crust down there. I don't think they do big holes down there, at least not voluntarily. Gerda and I might do a loop up north some time during the next few weeks. Maybe we can meet up then. What are your plans for your bike?
You'll be pleased to know that if I do end up in Christchurch I'll be more concerned with filling holes up, rather making the existing ones any bigger ... 😉Obviously if you and Gerda do end up doing the loop you're more than welcome to drop in, and that goes for the rest of you reprobates too ... ;DPlans for the bike(s): Basically get them legal, then get back on them and start riding ... 8) However, unfortunately there are some non motorcycle related issues that need to be sorted out first ... 🙁
in reply to: Back to the fold … #14564Wow!....Happy to buy you a beer to hear more :-).
Right! You're on. 8)I've got a very low pain threshold if someone is going to twist my arm to make me drink beer ... 😉 However, I'm not sure how long I'm going to be up here in Kerikeri, or even on North Island for that matter. With the way that the economy is things are decidedly quiet up north so I might have to head down to Christchurch to earn a crust.
in reply to: Back to the fold … #14562Welcome back John. We're looking forward to some stories and maybe a few pictures. No pressure 🙂
Thanks Alex, it's good to be back.Pics: Yeah I can oblige there.I picked up this old girl in Perth with aspirations of getting her back up and running. In the words of the Tui ad, "Yeah, right ..."Whilst I was over there I was working on the design and supervising the construction tailings dams in a couple of places.Argyle Diamond Mine, WA. No samples unfortunately ... ::)Robe River Iron Ore mine, WA. Yup, I've got a lump of that sitting on the desk here. Then I started 2010 in Namibia where I picked up this young lady, but unfortunately it was a doomed relationship right from day one ... 🙁I was over there working on the construction of a tailings dam on a Uranium mine, and no, I didn't steal any Uranium, honest, and that's not sitting on my desk either ... 😉For some reason I haven't got any pics of the Uranium mine, but you've seen one dusty hole in the middle of a desert, you've seen 'em all, eh? 😉After that I spent a while taking pictures of weird and wonderful stuff like these ...Stories: Well, they're best told over a beer or two, aren't they ... 😉
in reply to: New ACC Levies #12969As Garry suggested, what can BRONZ ever hope to achieve if they are not represented in Wellington, regardless of how much of a “grumpy old cunt” the chairman is.Alex, in my opinion, the only reasonable form direct action that politicians understand in this day and age, is to hit them in their budgets, then let them explain about funding deficits to the bean counters.... and if ACC want to move to a fully funded model, why don't cigarettes attract an ACC levy?
in reply to: New ACC Levies #12966A mate of mine has just flagged this issue up to me as I’ll be returning to NZ from Oz in the near future.DTY raised the point earlier about the rego fees on this side of the ditch, however what he didn’t point out is that across here Third Party Issuance is mandatory, as it is in the UK where I originally hail from. The effect of the compulsory insurance in the UK is that the spotty little oiks cannot afford to insure Impreza WRX’s, or ride GSXR’s because the insurance companies know high powered vehicles and adolescence are a bad combination. It also means it is the rider or driver that attracts the premium rather than the vehicle so if you drive or ride responsibly your premiums go down, whereas if you act like an idiot the premiums keep going up and up.Don’t get me wrong, I dislike insurance as much as, if not more than most, but in the UK insurance premiums are based on the likelihood of you causing a crash rather than being involved in one, and from memory incidents involving motorcycles are generally split 2/3 car divers, 1/3 motorcyclist’s fault. Therefore, rather than raising the ACC levy for the vulnerable, maybe it’s time to consider mandatory Third Party Insurance in NZ to cover the costs of damage to people and property caused by those who are at the root cause of the problem. As has been pointed out already it will be interesting to see what the real effect of this change will be. My money is on a reduction in the number of law abiding members of society riding motorcycles, and an increase in the number of people choosing to ride without rego or WoF.You will excuse me for stating the bleedin’ obvious, but I don’t see that this situation will reduce the number of ACC claims, or improve the ability of the ACC system to pay out on the claims that it receives.
in reply to: Airhead starter motors #11800Just to tie up the loose ends on this, Kane at http://www.rtwinworks.co.nz went out of his way to make sure that my mate got the starter and also the necessary support bracket for the Bosch starter. On the basis of the effort he put in, I'd certainly give him a go if I need anything else for the bike.CheersJohnPS. The usual rider to all this, I've got no affiliation to the guy but on this occasion he provided a good service.
in reply to: Airhead starter motors #11799Check out the parts links ...
Thanks for that, I didn't think to check there ... 🙄Because my mate wants to get the bike running in time for the long weekend, we've ended going for a recon Bosch unit from Kane at http://www.rtwinworks.co.nzI haven't actually spoken to the guy, but my mate seems impressed with his dealing so far. If he comes through I'll let you know, and you can add his details to your link ... 😎
in reply to: Hey I’ve been selected look #11250i never hardly get these
That is because Miss Hanukah knows you are a highly paid public servant who doesn't need her gazillions to keep yourself in the fashion you wish to be accustomed to, Steve.
... besides, if steve did get his share of the millions, he'd probably spend most of it on better brakes, Tourtatech toys, GPS nav and loads of other farkles ... he'd probably just waste the rest
in reply to: Head’s up folks #11242Not a bad idea Alex, but Steve is the only connection between the OR and my hotmail address that the scam came through on.The address that the OR have on record is my gmail address, so I suspect that Steve's PC's been got at.That said, I thought it was worthwhile to warn other OR members that the scammers are still trying it on.
in reply to: Which Airhead battery? #8711… but as I said, I thing you can probably get the non OEM Oilhead gel battery for the same sort of money from Experience.Good luck.
in reply to: Trip meter reset button rubber cover (gasket #8733I seem to remember a post on ADVrider (Oldschool) with someone suggesting that the bleed nipple cover of a brake calliper makes a servicable alternative.Unfortunately my net surfing skills obviosly arn't at full strength this evening, 'cos I can't find the thread now.[Edit] ... http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=147270
