My 2 pennies worth. All the above seems like a case of “overkill”  we lived on rain tank water no filters for over 10 years with 7 people including babies using it, no one ever got sick from it.  Regards Phil

Phil asked: "And to replace a battery on a R1100s ?"Take a packed lunch, you'll be a while.  That's why my handy-dandy solar maintainer is my best friend.  Bike backs into garage and gets plugged up to life support straight away, to prolong the battery life and put off the evil hour as long as possible.

I use a battery minder, I'm not as "green" as you. 👿 Regards Phil

How to do a clutch job on a beemer, start at the back and work your way towards the front until you find it  😮Ok so opposed to a japper with a wet clutch where you take off a cover and you are in this sounds bad.  😥 Hang about though  😉How replace the spark plugs on a four cylinder Jappa, first dismantle (without scratching please) a shit load of fairings and covers, remove fuel tank keep going in until you find the engine  😕To replace the plugs on an R series, first find a comfortable stool  😀You get my drift, you can focus on the whole picture or just look at the poorly painted bits  😀

    And to replace a battery on a R1100s ?

Thanks for all input  (bad pun)  I will stop worrying and carry on enjoying my R1100s.  It looks like it's all a “Spline in a teacup” (another bad pun) 🙄 😀  Phil

Hi Bwuice.  Re the”senior user”, thing yes. I think I have a couple years on you, unless you won't see 71 again. 👿  Back to the subject on hand. A personal  Question! have you had yours replaced? 😕  If the “Input shaft and clutch spline” need to be greased , How the hell do you do it? If there is no way to do so without taking the thing apart. I would ask, what kind of engineer. would design a machine like that? They are a Sports/Tourer so they should be able to stand being given a bit of stick now and then, as I do.  ( Never over a 110 you understand. 😉)

Does all this mean that in 5,267.52 km's time my 1998 R1100S is going to cost me a heap?   Should I sell it before then?  😐 How many owners have had to have work done. Is it only the R1100S that supposedly  need this at 80,000km's.  😮 There must be heaps of other BMW's with the same Input shaft and clutch spline set up.  Do they have the same life span?  Or is it just the way that R1100S owners ride? 🙄

I am but have never used it yet, I know you would only whinge about it Dean  🙄I did go down to the Waiheke ferry last week to see how much it would be to take a bike only across with me to Waiheke using my virgin gold card, but its not allowed, must pay full fare for bike and me, only pedestrian traffic is allowed for the 100% discount out of hours, so I must continue to live on the $175 a week the government gives me without any of the free perks.  🙁

Actually I agree with the goodies our seniors get.  We still have a way to go to match Australia. You are still working Jim? By the time I get there it will be 70 😐

I am 70 and still working, have never used my so called "Gold Card"No such think as free transport in Thames

My commute is about 37k each way on open country road and motorway. I have gone for an 1100 S for the sharper overall ride. The twins are hugely better than a single or this type of riding. I have also done stretches of 20 k on gravel which is fine on this bike

    How about a photo etc

If you follow this to it's conclusion, it means that if you ask someone in another car  to follow you because you know the way and they speed in order to keep up with you even if you are not speeding. You are responsible.  👿 how silly is that.

According to the vehicle tester at the local VTNZ no modifications or added lights are allowed on motorcycles. You are not allowed to add fog or spotlights and you are not allowed to change the way the indicators work. I would suggest wiring any extra lights so they can be switched off with a hidden switch.I wanted to add a strip of LED lights on the front of each handguard on the GS. No go. Although I may still add them and make them easy to disconnect or switch off for WoF purposes.

This seems to be a grey area I changed the rear indicators  on my r1100s to led + fitted extra  indicator lights either side of the number plate. Our local VTNZ, looked it up in his book of words, and said they were fine as long as they were all the same color

The “Gold Star” look's like the same as the one I had stolen from the speedway car park in Southampton, when I was about 18. But no way of finding out now.  😥  Love to put in a bid, but to rich for me now.  Phil

As a non accountant, I have been doing some maths. If the ACC Levy is $745.77 a year and you only ride say 2,000 KM a year, the cost per km is $00.372885 per km. If however you ride say 10,000 KM per year the cost per km drops to $00.074577 per km. As you can see the more you ride the cheaper it gets, but the chances are it will cost the ACC more, since the more KMs you ride, the greater the chance you will need to call on their services. So get out there and ride as much as you can, that way you get much better value for money. 🙄 😎 Regards Phil (PS I also posted this on the Ulysses site)

Dean. I have no problem if you any person does want to wear a helmet. I ony have two conditions that must be met. 1. Shoud you fall off and get a head injury, no hospital treatment, no nothing from the state.2. I/We not have to be the one to tell your loved ones that you are dead or seriously injured. Listening to them cry, snivvle or blubber, wale is rather annoying to our ears and we something we should not have to put up. Every time we contact them during the future investigation they cry and that really does ya head in.

Your quote Steve. " Sorry I only do Nostalgia"  👿 Re to many valves. Does lilfe stand still? 😀  Regards Phil
