I had a look at a 1999 R850R and a 2004 R850R and R1150R at Big bikes in Hamilton yesterday and none of them have a Lambda probe in the collector boxes, so I wonder if they are not fitted with Catalyzers because the NZ and Japan regs did not require them to be fitted? The two 2004 RR bikes are Japanese imports. There is a guy in Hamilton http://www.rapidartnz.com/index.htm that prepairs race bikes that has tentativly offered to make me a Y pipe and he sells aftermarket silencers, so I may go see him and see what his all up price is for the job.Cheers

Hi Kokopelli and Alex, Thanks for your advise – most appreciated. This is my first oil head bike (had an R65 before) and have never taken the tank off. Presumably you just undue the bolt on the bracket and slide the tank back? Is there a fuel connection hose that needs to be removed or is that automatic as there is no fuel cock to speak of?Presumably all the wires etc are all under the tank and of course, I do not have the maintenance manual to make reference to 😐I can inspect a reasonable amount of the HT leads, without the tank off, but then that is only half an inspection? not much point in that! My intermittent ignition happend when I was at some lights and then second time just coming up to a round about, so both times my handlebars were aimed straight, but good idea anyway to start the bike and see if movement adds to the problem. After the problem did not present itself after the bump start, I still went for my ride and did about 150Kms trouble free and enjoyable riding and hence my thought that it was an intermittent problem. Cheers

Hi Kokpelli,Thanks for forum mail. I checked my vin number on http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi and interestingly, it states that my bike is not fitted with a catalyzer, which backs up my thoughts as there is no lambda probe fitted into the collector box? I am still unable to remove the collector and silencer owing to my other problem of two allen studs holding the two tabs on the front of the collector box, but if there is no Cat, then the collector seems to be a waste of space? I will have to check up on what the cost is to make a pipe and buy a stainless silencer and see if it is worth it.Cheers and thanks for your help. Most appreciated. happy Christmas.

Hi Kokopelli,You made a nice job of polishing your pipes. Mime look like your "after" picture even before I start polishing but I am a bit of a polish freak anyway.Have you removed the CAT collector box and just have a pipe between the silencer and your pipes? From the photo it looks like you just have a single pipe to the muffler? or am I mistaken by the photo? That is another modification I was thinking of - removing the cat collector etc and just having a single pipe into an aftermarket stainless silencer and other than the weight reduction, I wondered if there were any other benfits? Freer revving etc.Cheers,Mike

I checked the pipes with a magnet over the weekend and both pipes are now confirmed as NON magnetic and hence, I think they must be 304 stainless.Cheers,

in reply to: 97.5 Octane Fuel #11420

Hi,I have used the Gull 98 octane with ethanol in it in both my car and my bike. My car seems to run smoother with it, but I am unsure if I notice a difference with my bike, but it certainly did not give any problems or adverse effects.Cheers,Mike

Hi Guys,Thanks for all the help and comments. It is actually the two into one pipes themselves that I am talking about - the collector box and silencer are all 304 stainless. 409 stainless is actually magnetic as it is slightly martensitic, but I have not tried the magnet idea yet - good idea.I do ride my bike, but I do value the bike looking good as well and the HPC coating is only $80 approx plus a cleaning charge and there are horse power gains to be had as the process coats the inside of the pipes as well and provides for faster gas extraction - that what HPC coatings say anyway - my idea was the cosmetics of it.Cheers

Hi Kokopelli, Thanks for your reply. 9 year old bike and 52000 Kms, the chrome should have burnt off by now, so maybe I will have a go with the wet and dry and Autosol and see how it looks. If I get some road gravel damage on the left hand cylinder that goes across the front of the engine, you tend to get a very light brown surface corrosion mark if it gets damp, so I thought they could be chromed steel, but I will see how I go with your suggestion. Thanks,Mike

Sorry about that, but I attached the wrong photo – more detail of the bike in this one! Anybody know the bike?
