Thanks again NZGSer 😉Cheers,Mike
in reply to: tire reccomendations #12168Thanks for the redirection to the interactive 'here' – I clicked on it and went to the web site. Nice looking tyres, I shall check my tyre sizes and see if they fit in with what is offered.Who sell's them?I am in Hamilton, but could travel north of the bombays if necessary.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Battery charging #12160Hi MikeUnless your bike has a Can bus wiring system there shouldn't be any problem charging through the power socket.CheersGarry
Hi Garry,Can bus? Errrrrrrrrmmm? What's that? 😕Cheers,Mike
in reply to: tire reccomendations #12164Hi NZGSer,Thanks for the recommendation, I shall check up on them and see what they are about. You were going to add a link on the bottom of your message but it did not happen?"Go here for a look" 😕Your Trial attacks certainly look as though they work from your photo! 😐Cheers,Mike

in reply to: Low fuel warning light question #11941Hi allWhen I picked up my 1997 850 the owner mentioned that the low fuel light always came on very early. Is this a known/common thing or what??Does anyone else have this issue. I find it comes on at about 220km.What IS the usual city-riding range of a tank on an 850?Appreciate any help with this as I don't want to run out of fuel to find out the range but I also don't want to always topping up the tankThanksTracy
Hi Tracy,My R850R does about the same range of mileage before the light comes on, but I have never gone beyond the next service station before I filled up again. I have not been willing to test how much more it will go to see how much the reserve is. You can only just see fuel in the tank when the light is on so I am unsure how much remains and I have just recently had to replace my fuel filter as one of the intermittent ignition problems I had, so prefer to keep the tank on the right side of the reserve light!Garry is right about the capacity of the R850R tank (20 litres) as the web site http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/specpages/R850R.htm confirmsFuel Tank Useable Volume 20.5 litres / 4.50 gal / 5.41 gal US Reserve 4.0 litres / 0.87 gal / 1.05 gal USBut I dont think the total range is appropriate for your bike.Cheers,Mike 🙄
in reply to: Petrol brands #11882Hi Mike,I agree with what you say about how your drive. I drive (in my car) 32 Kms there and back every day to and from work and I opted to try doing 90Kms in 100Kms areas to see how much effect it had and the fuel savings were there to be counted for sure.I am onto the second tank of Caltex with Techron now in my bike, and I am sure it makes a difference, but I have done a couple of early morning rides in the waikato fog and I think the wet and dense air certainly adds to the perceived increased performance.I would be interested to see how you go two or three down the road with Caltex in your bike.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Petrol brands #11880Hi Mike,Thanks for your reply. A Merc sportline - very nice. My car is a BMW M///tech 318ti compact and I have run it on all brands of fuel so far but the 95 Caltex with techron runs like I am running my car on 98 octane and gives much better mileage. It is hard to tell if I am getting better mileage with my bike as I have only had two tank full's but it seems to run well on it.If you google Techron, there are all kinds of stories (mainly from the US) to say how good it is - they even seel it in small bottles as a fuel system cleaner over there. I am sure you will feel and see a difference. I have no affiliation to Caltex and I too was driven by the supermarket coupons, but Caltex will allow 4c per litre on your coupons anyway.Cheers,Mike 🙂
in reply to: A coupla questions about the R850R #11827Hi Tracy,My 99 R850R has done 54000 Kms and service history done from new and I recently had problems with fuel filter and hall sensors which caused the bike to cut out - hopefully you will not experiance this, but if you do, I can let you have more details. Enjoy your R850R and hope to see you on the road one day!The Lambda probe (if there is one) is just behind your rear brake lever area on the stainless collector box. I doubt if there will be one if the VIN thing says that there is No Catalyzer. Are you thinking of dumping the muffler collector box and fitting a pipe and after market muffler? I have thought og it but not got there yet as there are a few tales of woe on line about doing such things. But check this out http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=1836053106167881514 Sounds nice hey? 🙄Cheers,Mike Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Oilhead idle speed and idle adjust #11856Thanks Bogser. I will take it back to the shop, as it did tick over well before the hall sensor problem and when they changed my fuel filter, he balanced the throttles and tick over idle speed, so why it seems lumpy (dips) now I have no idea. All's well apart from that though. Is this two I owe you now! 🙂Cheers,Mike
in reply to: A coupla questions about the R850R #11824Forgot the bit about 95 octane as well! I run mine on 95 octane and have even tried the gull 98 with ethanol in it and it runs well on that too. I have not tried it on 91, but there are no knock sensors on the engine to retard your ignition, but you may here pinging if you do run it on 91. General rule is anything over 10:1 compression ratio needs 95 octane as a minium.Cheers,Mike 🙄
in reply to: A coupla questions about the R850R #11823Hi Tracy,I have an R850R mine is a 1999 model and NZ new and I asked the same question, as there is no Lambda probe stabbed into the collector box before the muffler. I checked my bike details out on http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi and when you enter the last 7 figures of your VIN number mine came up with "NO CATALIZER" so given no Lamda probe and that statement, I figured out that I dont have one? I have been unable to remove my collector box and muffler to check the weight of it, as there are two screws that dont want to come undone, but I figured that as there were no anti smog regs in NZ in 97 or even 99 or even now 😕 probably they were not fitted with one.Nice bike, I hope you dont have the same problems that I have just had with the dreaded Hall sensors. How many Kms on the clock on yours? and does it have a service history?Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Great Motorcycle Books #8392Hi,I bought the BMW files from a guy off Trademe (not the guy currently selling for $42.00) and it is a good book from an American Motorcyclist magazine and is road tests of the : R90S, Krauser MKM1000, K100RT, K75S, K1, R100GS Paris Dakar, R1100R, R65, R80 +++ Good book and brought some memories back to me about my much loved R65 and my dreams of owning an R100S and K75S and I once rode the K1 at the launch BMWOR rally up above Nelson and the write up seemed to be what I remember of having ridden it!Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Intermittent ignition – R850R 1999 #11531🙄 I picked my bike up today and the first noticable effects other than a dent in the wallet, was that my bike starts easier – it used to sound as though the battery was going to give up, but now, it springs into life. Second, the tick over is set at the same revs as before, but the bike seems “lumpier” than before and the flywheel effect is more noticable 😕 😕 😕 but it rides well and gear changes are smoother, so the engine has a better balance, so I shall try it and see how it goes, and hopefully, look forward to some reliable riding from now on.Thanks to all that contributed and Bogser for picking those damned hall sensors.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Intermittent ignition – R850R 1999 #11530Hi NiggleC and Mica,Thanks for that. I will pass the comments on to Hamilton Motorcycles. I was hopeful of picking the bike up today, but the plate is still being repaired, so I will keep my fingers crossed for tomorrow. I am having withdrawal symptoms now from my bike! Can you get counselling for this? 😥Cheers,Mike
