in reply to: Brake Pads – Recommendations #13541
Hi Guys,I fitted the Premier brake pads this weekend after giving the calipers a birthday with a new seal kit each and new Dot 4 brake oil and after the intial wear in period, the brakes are excellent now. Two finger braking is applicable otherwise the rear wheel may be doing a wheelie! The brake pads I took out were the originals I think, as they were Brembo. The new Premier Kevlar pads are a hell of a lot less dusty as well.My bike is like a new one now, new tires, new pads, calipers overhauled, new fluids all round, brakes, engine, gearbox and final drive! Just need the time now to ride it some... 😆Cheers,MikeÂ
in reply to: Lights on R1100RT #12255Hi Cavaliernz,Thanks for the link. The automotive bulbs - bayonet fitting - look the same as the Dick Smith bulb I tried and it was not very good at all as it was not very bright and did not provide the white light at the bottom of the lens for the number plate light. Thanks anyway,Cheers,Mike
in reply to: tire reccomendations #12174Hi Guys,After a long period of deliberation and reading about tyres, I settled on the Michelin Road Pilot CT2 tires and so far, I am very pleased with them. Like DickT, I noticed also how quiet they are after the Metzler Lazertech's and the steering is lighter too.More interesting though, is that with the tire change, they have fitted two 7 gram balancing weights on both front and rear wheels and prior to this there were no weights fitted to either wheel. At speeds up to 60KPH I did not notice any difference, but above that, then the bike is noticeably smoother.I wonder now if the Metzlers were home fitted or the balancing weights have fallen off over a period of time. One more job to do now - change the front brake pads as one is down to 2mm, so a overhaul of the calipers is also called for I guess.Cheers,Mike 🙂 Â

in reply to: R850R seat mods #13200Hi Tracy,I do somewhere at home - I will find it and post his details when I get a chance.Cheers,Mike 😎
Hi Tracy,http://mastertrimltd.co.nz/ 17 Lake Road, Frankton, Hamilton 078469191.I cannot find the invoice he gave me but I am sure it was around $140. I actually phoned a few Motor trimmers in my area before I had the modification done and they all seemed to be around the same price, but this guy impressed me as he had a real nice Ferrari in the shop - so someone had a great deal of trust in him.Cheers,Mike

in reply to: R850R seat mods #13197Hi Tracy,When the upholsterer removed the original vinyl cover, the foam had been glued directly to it (or vice versa), so he had to replace the foam and we kind of kept the original design but added a wee bit at the front and directly under 😉 - something like the link that you sent about adding for comfort. The foam he used was a different spec than the 10 year old stuff that was in there as well. Apparantly foam has come a long way since the day my seat was made!! 😮Cheers,Mike
What you want is the VISI-BIKE device produced by D A Winters in New Plymouth. I fitted one to my R1100 RS and it worked well - it probably won't work on a R1200 Can Bus system though. If your local bike shop can't get you one contact the manufacturer - details are at: http://202.27.193.149/Org?Action=Profile&Org_id=229CheersBrian Z
Hi Brian, Thanks for the link. How big is the Visi-bike electronic box of bits and where did you or do you store it? Did you have to use another switch for the device, or as per the wiring installation, they just come on when you turn the ignition switch?Cheers,Mike
in reply to: R850R seat mods #13195Hi Tracy,When I said I was going to go to the company in the mount (rider?) where they do Corbin style modifications - Trimit was the company that I was thinking of. They quoted me $630 to do my seat, but that did include the pillion seat as well, where as I only did my own seat.Pictures attached as promised and from memory, I paid $140 for my seat mods.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: R850R seat mods #13191Hi Tracy,I will take some photos over the weekend and post them when I get a chance.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: R100RS plastics – cleaning product #12578Hi Terry,I use a plastic polish - a Solvol Autosol product and it is cheap - about $7 a tube. This cleans plastic rather then polishes it, but once it is clean, then you can apply a polish over the top. The cleaner gets all the road film off etc.http://www.ridershq.co.nz/product/573/AutosolPlasticCleaner75mltube.bossI got the autosol plastic cleaner from a motor parts retailer in Hamilton - Trailways or something like that. If you are based in Hamilton, I could let you have a tube as I got a couple as it is not your regularly avaialble stuff.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: R850R seat mods #13189Hi Tracy,I have a 1999 R850R and have modified the riders seat (not the pillion) I found that I was sliding about in my seat - maybe the previous owner had polished the vinyl and I agree with the pressure points bit too :-o.I was going to go to the company in the mount (rider?) where they do Corbin style modifications, but I found a car upholstery guy in Hamilton and when I went to see him he was doing an old Ferrari and a Porsche restoration, so I figured he must be good.I now have a basket weave cover on the rider’s seat (only) and had the foam changed for new and some high tech stuff. He did say that I could use gel instead of foam but the cost was quite different, so I went with the foam and am pleased with the total job and now I dont slide around!I can email you some photo's if you like and details of the upholstery guy if need be?Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Lights on R1100RT #12250Hi CavalierNZ,I wonder if the LED light from Repco is different from the one from Dick Smiths? I tried a 19 LED bulb and they are not very good at all :x. They work alright but the LED's are very directional and because the rear light lens unit is designed for a conventional filament bulb and use the 360 degree reflection from the bulb, the directional LED bulb does not "fill" the lens with light. The LED does not also provide the rear number plate illumination through the clear plastic window in the lens.So what type is the Repco unit? a complete light unit (reflector, lens bulb etc) on its own? 😕Cheers,MikeÂ
in reply to: Great Motorcycle Books #8401If you enjoyed Lois on the Loose then try Red Tape and White Knuckles. This book covers her trip through Africa. An enjoyable read.Hi,I just finished Lois on the Loose - good book. Have you seen her web site?http://www.loisontheloose.com/Cheers,
in reply to: Lights on R1100RT #12248Hi CavalierNZ,By the way I have ordered some LED running lights for my tail-light. I will let you know how they are.Did you get the LED "running light" for your taillight and is it a light brake light? I see they sell them - a bayonet fit in Dick Smiths for about $12.00 but have not taken the lens off yet to see if they taillight is the same? Have you found them to be better or are you still waiting for delivery? There was an article in a recent two wheels magazine about LED taillights and they showed photographic evidence of how good the LED was over the standard bulb and I am keen to put one in if the result is keeping the goons behind me from getting so close!Cheers, 😉
