in reply to: Battery problems #14550
Hi,Update on my battery problem. I fitted a new battery over the weekend but found that when I asked any bike shop for a quote on a 19ah 12V battery for a 1999 BMW R850R all of the batteries offered were not correct on size for fitting in the battery carrier ???The batteries offered were either Motobatt or Yuasa and the length and width of both batteries would not have fitted in the battery carrier, so I got in contact with Experiance BMW and they offered me a BMW battery or a Diamec battery (the same as the one that I took out), but eventually I found a Century battery no maintenance sealed type 12V 19ah at super cheap and it is exactly the right size.I got it fitted on Sunday and all seems OK now 😀Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Emission setup on NZ market bikes #5410Hi All,Thanks to Bwucie sending an image of the potentiometer through to me, I checked my bike with both side panels removed and I could not find one anywhere? My bike does not have an O2 sensor, and the VIN states that there is no catalyzer, so I assume that the collector box prior to the muffler must be empty? I have never had the collector box and muffler off to weigh it, as I am buggered if I can undo the two small allen cap screws that secure the collector box to the centre stand, but my exhaust note is noticably quiet, so I always assumed that the catalyzer was fitted?Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Boosterplug #13580Hi All,I took the punt and ordered an accelerator cable for my R850R and a fellow work mate with a 2005 R1200GS bought one as well. http://www.sol2.be/Accelerator/English/index.htmlWe must have ordered them on the day that the Iceland volcano decided to pop its top as they took over a month to deliver, but I fitted mine last weekend and noted easier starting and a quicker throttle response. The bike seems to have a little more lower down power, as it pulls as soon as you squirt the throttle.I have not gone far enough to see if the fuel consumption is greatly affected, but from initial response - money well spent. I even took it out and checked the bike out to confirm the effects of having fitted the cable were real. There are different models for the different engine sizes, but "non believers" with an R850R are more than welcome to test ride my cable 😮I will post the results of my workmates R1200GS when he gets it fitted.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Emission setup on NZ market bikes #5405Hi Bwucie,The picture never arrived in my email address?Cheers,Mike
in reply to: R850R – it wont start??? #13783Hi Guys,Thanks for the comments and suggestions. I checked it out at lunch time, had a multi meter across the Motronic fuse - it did not give an immediate full scale deflection, so I changed it for a new one that did, pulled the relays and cleaned the contacts, pulled the fuel injector electrical connections and air box, cleaned those contacts, boxed it up, pulled the choke out and it fired first pop! 😆It did have a fuel smell yesterday at my attempts to start it and when I pulled the plugs they were wet, so maybe it was just having a moment, but come the weekend I will have the tank off and clean all electrical contacts etc. Thanks for your help - most appreciated.Cheers,Mike
Hi Guys,Check this link https://www.kisantech.com/index.php?cat_id=4 it just seems to be a plug in relay to replace the existing indicator relay, but it has options so that it will leave your indicators on, and flash when required. 😮Anybody tried one of these?Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Emission setup on NZ market bikes #5403Hi NZGSer,Is there something wrong with the photograph as it does not load up when I check this link/ Is it the photograph or is it me and the PC I am using?Cheers, mike
in reply to: Emission setup on NZ market bikes #5400Hi NZGSer,Thanks for your reply. I shall have to have a look under my seat on the left hand side and see if I can see this CO potentiometer 😕 I cannot say that I have seen it before when I have had the seat off, but then I was not looking for a potentiometer. Is it obvious to see it? near the air fliter box, fuse box, is it connected to anything other than wires?Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Emission setup on NZ market bikes #5398Hi BillyBM,Thanks for your response. My R850R does not have an O2 sensor stabbed into the cat, in fact when I checked the vin number out for my bike on http://www.bmw-z1.com/VIN/VINdecode-e.cgi it says I don’t even have a catalyser. So from what you are saying my bike does not have a plug (no feedback) so where is the Co trim pot that I would have to adjust presumably, if I fit an aftermarket muffler and pipe to replace the OEM collector box and muffler? 😕Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Emission setup on NZ market bikes #5396Hi Uncamoose,If the iridium plugs are a direct cross reference match for the OEM plugs, they will not be hotter, than the NGK or Bosch plug - they can’t be, as you will run the risk of damaging engine parts if they are.The intention of the iridium is for life expectancy of the spark plug.Cheers,Mike 😮
in reply to: Emission setup on NZ market bikes #5394Hi Uncamoose,The problem that Tracy identified was running rich at idle, and I don’t see what Iridium spark plugs will do, as the spark is not hotter than a "standard" rated spark plug; it is just that the iridium is a harder material than the "normal" electrode and hence the reason why they will supposedly last longer. For the cost of two NGK or Bosch spark plugs and the few minutes it takes to change them, I don’t see Iridium plugs to be an option. Thanks anyway.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Emission setup on NZ market bikes #5392Hi Tracy,Although you wrote this up a few years ago now, did you make any further progress on the issue? They run a seperate "CO potentiometer" which you plug into the existing wiring loom. This is used for setting the idle mixture. If you remove the CAT & CCP and don't add a CO pot then the bike will idle rich. You can buy the CO pot from BMW dealers. So, the config to aim for is:As mentioned, remove the CATRemove any CCP plug, then remove the Motronic fuse for 1 minute to reset the unit.Install a CO pot and set it with the bike hooked up to an exhaust gas analyser.Reason for asking is that I am thinking of fitting a Zorst http://www.motorcycleexhausts.co.nz/ pipe and muffler to my R850R and when I read your comment about the CO Potentiometer, I stopped and now need to get a better understanding of this before I proceed further.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: R1100RS Oil Sight Glass #13553Hi Kokpelli and The Red Baron,Is that after the run or after the first five minutes of the run? 😕Cheers,Mike
Hi Rogerdj.I just tried the link too and it seems to have packed up? I even googled Visi bike and nothing there either? No, I never got the kit, as when the link worked I emailed them about it, but they were suggesting that I buy it through Trademe rather than direct and when I asked for more details about the black box of tricks (size, shape, how many wires etc) they never returned my emails. I gave up as they seemed to be most disinterested.Cheers,Mike
in reply to: Brake Pads – Recommendations #13543Hi Alex,My final drive oil was "cloudy" by comparison to the BMW Spec Castrol 90 grade oil I replaced it with.My bike its a 1999 bike and has 57000Kms on the clock. I only changed the oil, as I thought my gearbox was sounding more clunky than usual and wanted to change that, so to do the final drive oil at the same time seemed logical and its easy to do anyway. I cannot say that the oil was a dark colour though - I hope that does not cause you any worries about what you found? 😕Cheers,Mike
