I have used the horn as Malcolm G outlines.  You get to feel when drivers esp. are going to do something which may hurt you.  A reminder on the horn is useful in these situations.  In NZ, many people get p#$%ed off if you give them a beep, however overseas the horn is used as a means of communication and I like this use.

As an addition for the future, I brought my bike in through Auckland.  I did all of the legwork myself.  Customs wasn't a problem really, just needed proof of ownership etc and a valuation from a bike shop.  This was a problem as Experience weren't keen to give one unseen.  In the end they wrote a reasonably non-commital valuation based on my description.  I then paid a fee which was worked out by taking the cost of freight off the valuation and multiplying by the number of tools in a sidchrome socket set (I think).  The difficult bit was getting MAF to check the bike out.  As it had come by sea, it should have been inspected by the wharf MAF guys, however, it was being stored near the airport.  In the end, my charm won over a sweet young MAF officer.  After paying the appropriate fee, I was allowed to take the bike away.  In the end, I don't think I got my change from $NZ1000, after fees, WOF, plate and rego.

When I bought my GS, it had had the K100 front callipers fitted.  Apparently you need to mill 3 or 6 mm off the bracket to fit it.  Fitted with the scintered disc, it certainly stops well, even when laden with me and 150kg of gear.

I fitted a small car alarm siren to my bike.  This is loud enough to wake anyone and was very effective in parting traffic when riding through Cairo.  I took the 'live' wire to the normal horn to a normal 'on/on' switch.  This then feeds the horn or the siren.  I leave it on the horn setting for WOF and flick to siren when in cities.
