in reply to: Airhead drive shaft and clutch repair #11479
I've finally had time to put the new tank on the bike. The only thing left to do it to change the fork oil and pay for the registration, then I am ready for the next adventure ride. some time during the last two weeks of January would be good.
in reply to: R850R / R1100R exhaust pipes #11382The bike is stock standard, Mike. I am don't think there are any gains to be had, apart from a different sound, and perhaps a little less weight. The cat's weight is so low down, that you won't notice any benefits, apart from a bit less weight in your wallet. As the wallet is usually a lot higher up, there may be a slight benefit there.I only just cleaned my bike, I do it a couple of times a year, whether it needs it or not. As it's never stayed clean for more than three days in a row, I figured that I'd be polishing through the paint before too long.
in reply to: Airhead drive shaft and clutch repair #11478The clutch was fine, but at the low end of the wear limit. I probably should have just left it alone. At least it works just as well as before. The main problem were the tranny leaks. The drive shaft had a tiny amount of play in it, that's now also fixed. However, the universals are about 10 degrees out of phase, so success may only be temporary there. We'll see. I am getting to know the bike, though.
in reply to: Airhead drive shaft and clutch repair #11476It's taken me 3.5 hours to get the bike back together. Hopefully I got it all right. I even remembered to lube the splines. The drive shaft is sorted and the clutch reconditioned, got all new seals in the transmission. I haven't ridden it yet, but have had it running and in gear. The clutch action is fine, no judder when engaging and it releases when it should. Hope this won't change when it's under load.My apprenticeship is progressing, thanks to a very helpful Mr. Airhead.
in reply to: R850R / R1100R exhaust pipes #11379Had a bit of a clean up on mine. I didn't get too carried away with it. You can clearly see the transition from stainless to chrome. I've come to terms with the fact that the bike will never become a beauty queen. It's a GS after all, it bears its scars with pride. Chrome won't get you home, or what ever the Rustys say. 😀 I will give it a bit of clean tomorrow, but don;t blame me if it rains on Sunday. Before:After:
in reply to: Another case of black vs. white #11461Those are pretty good prices. I hope they sell lots. Is the Xmoto the supermoto style bike? That used to be the most expensive of the three.
in reply to: Another case of black vs. white #11459For a brand new bike, or for the demo models?
in reply to: Airhead drive shaft and clutch repair #11475Got my clutch back, another overnight service. A little bit more expensive than quoted, but if it works it's ok.$170 buys you this.

in reply to: Airhead drive shaft and clutch repair #11474Danny B. suggested Beatty's to me. They fixed it overnight.
in reply to: No more BMW helmets #11471The Shoei peak seems to be good up to 120km/h, but only if there is no additional head wind. today it nearly pulled my head off. There were some nasty wind gusts on the motorway. I must have looked like a guy with Parkinson's, the way my head got knocked around.
in reply to: Another case of black vs. white #11457They've got at least three of those sitting at Experience waiting for owners. As soon as the lotto comes through, one will follow me home.
in reply to: No more BMW helmets #11469Dean, don't you reckon that the peak on the System 4 is too short to be useful anyway? The one on the Shoei is a lot longer, but still quite short as far as peaks go, because it is a compromise between effectiveness and how it reacts to buffeting. I can't see the System 6 coming out with a peak, either. The 6 seems to have a built in sun visor instead. I usually ride with tinted safety glasses, because I like to keep the visor open a lot. The glasses I use can be cheaply replaced, but I suspect that the same can't be said of the inbuilt visor. People who have the C2 seem to like it, though.I guess I'll just have to wait and see.
in reply to: No more BMW helmets #11465The system 5 seems to use nicer materials for the interior. I still wear my system 4, but it's definitely past its use-by date. Looks like we'll miss out on the System 6. I may just go for standard helmet next time. I used to think I could no longer be happy with an ordinary helmet, but the Shoei has taught me otherwise. Dean also seems to like his BMW off-road helmet and he used to be a bit of a flip-up man himself.Still, less choice is not a good thing.
