As someone has already suggested, it's probably a good idea if we make and send an official BMWOR submission as well. Since the AGM is on this weekend it will surely be mentioned there. As a matter of fact, people will probably have to be told not to rant on about this. If the executive can come up with a suitable wording, we can all use it and pass it on to the ACC. It would have to be a constructive submission. Since we don't have the figures and are likely never to get the real figures, this will be a difficult thing to do. My main objection is the arbitrary nature of the levy structure and its unfairness. ACC will need to come up with something better than that, and I bet they know that as well. They have certainly stirred the nest and are probably now sitting back to see what the response will be. Or maybe I am just giving them too much credit. Please do attend the BRONZ meeting, if you can.

It wouldn't be fair to make you pay.

"we have enough retired persons...."   Sorry mate, we won't be around; we all have to sell up now.

That's a fair enough point. This potential hike in rates will be the tipping point for a lot of people. The register might notice a difference. But lot of people enjoy cleaning and looking at their bikes and you don't need to register them to do that.I enjoy my bikes too much to let them go and I can't see Gerda giving up hers. Anyway, I'd have to buy a car, and I can do without those quite well.

TV3 had said you could ride the bike with no regitration and pay a couple of tickets each year if you are unlucky or you could even have one registration plate for both bikes as long as they both had the same manufaturer.

They'll never think of checking that, or putting the fines up accordingly.

The fees just announced are ACC's proposals to fix their shortfall. I reckon it's a psychological ploy, start with a mindblowingly high figure, then JK can step in and demand they are reduced, then we meekly accept an increase to 'just' $500, everyone's a winner!  Time for some serious protesting I think.Campaign for more cheesecutter safety barriers maybe, much cheaper to saw us in half than fix us up after surviving a impact with armco.

It will be something like that. Still, I am upset because the system is unfair, not because I'll have to pay my share. Surely they should be looking at the big picture, including roading and licencing. I want those buses out of my bike lanes!

Bwucie, that bike of yours can't have more than 50cc, so what are you complaining about. I'll have to get a monkey bike for commuting as well. I'd hate to be in the bike business right now, especially if I didn't have any bike under 650cc for sale.

I don't think I will be riding bikes much longer.

Yep, that's the intention. We have three bikes over 800cc. Why should  I pay more than a 600cc Race-replica? Perhaps they should link it to horsepower instead? Also, why should I pay it twice, when I can only ride one bike at a time? What about riders who don't even ride on the roads, like all those MX guys? I don't mind supporting the scheme, but it should be reasonably fair. By the way, that's only the ACC levy, the other stuff still goes on top. It will end up costing closer to $800. It might be cheaper to get personal insurance and opt out of the scheme altogether. That doesn't appear to be an option.

I've been wanting to go there ever since I saw the front page picture on a road map book that was published in 1985. The map is sitting right next to me, but sadly the cover is missing. The picture was titled “Road to Twizel”. Two years ago we cam within 20km of visiting it. This January we should be able to actually get there.

Re. pads, my first set lasted 55000kn, the second around the same. For the first replacement set I bought the proper BMW pads. I think they are $170 a side now. Recently I've fitted new pad again, this  time EBC organic pads for $55 a side. Their brake performance is slightly less aggresive than the original pads, but brake feel is still good. My bike is now at 116000km, all mine. The discs are frightfully expensive, but even for these you can get aftermarket options. If this is going to be a concern will depend on how much riding you do. If it's only about 5000km a year, as some people do, I wouldn't worry.

The leading edge of the spokes do get a hammering. Once or twice I used Autosol to make them look pretty again.  However, I am way past caring about that. The only perma-fix I know is to clean them, wax them, and then not ride the bike. If it really upsets you, you could go an have the spokes replaced.

Come on guys, it's a glamorous job.  😀 I've done it for 3.5 years, what a great excuse to go riding.

My Shinko experiment is now over and I want to withdraw my endorsement. Today my rear tyre delaminated. Several tread blocks looked as if they were about to pop off and the inside of the tyre showed bubbles. Luckily I spotted it before I rode the bike home. Well, you could feel it while riding. Thethe tyre place I go to is only 2km down the road from work. They will be sending the tyre back and hopefully I'll get some money refunded.Yep, several people will say "I've told you so"
