in reply to: Rusty Nuts – Grand Challenge #11194
hats off to you Des for completing this event – sounds a real challenge – cheers Aslan
in reply to: The Bubba Scrub – An inspiring Jumping Style #11110Alex It sounds like you are looking for a lighter more capable off road adventure bike.... so has the weekend further hooked you on adventure stuff.Sadly I've been looking at 400's realising they can solve the 250 shortcomings and meet the 250 advantages. Right now i see a 400 or 450 in my future. I think the KTM 690 is a neat bike and possibly fits the bill but a DRZ400e does as well for a lot less cash. $5k for one with 5000km's on it. Top speed of around 150kmph and still only tipping the scales down around 120kg.I really shouldn't spend anymore time looking and more time working. I must work. I must work. I must... damn it's not working. Hi Des - this post resonated with me - the point about researching other bikes on the Net - major distraction - bit the bullet and sold my very able little DR350 and went for a DR650. Would have liked a KTM640 but heh - too much tied up in toys already.Hope to link with you Alex et al some time in future - you planning on doing the Hawkes Bay ride (TonyW) over on KiwiBiker.Cheers Stephen O aka Aslan PS re the bubba scrub - I'm glad I'm not the only one in awe / intimidated by the thought of attempting that stuff.Dave I expect to see you mastering the Bubba Scrub. I notice in the picture of Gillard ( the kiwi) that you can see he's clearly hooked his left foot under the plastic and I'm guessing he'll nudge it back with his knee. Probably that and the bars at the same time.
in reply to: Another member #11093welcome to the site Cam – your GS sounds to be giving you good service. I had a Scott Oiler on a DR350 I owned and found it very good. Cheers Aslan
in reply to: 42nd Traverse #11072well done you guys – gutsy effort – 'you knocked the bastard off' eh?IMO much of this stuff is all about attitude - being in the right head space and looking where you want to go - easier said than done for some of us 😳
in reply to: First ride of the 450 #10945looks nice Dean – when does yours arrive? cheers Aslan aka Stephen O
in reply to: New Member #10929Here is a photo of me at Ruapuna on the 31-Aug-2008.Enjoy, i did and scared myself a little too. 😀 😀
welcome Flymo - I scare myself often - riding a ridiculously heavy GS like it were a trail bike - cheers Aslan
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10880Sounds like this could be a lot of fun Alex. After looking at the vids I might wait until I have a few more off road Ks under my belt before I have a bash at it. Still thinking of the TTTTT. depends on this weekend. Off to the Warriors (Seats in the Grandstand yeehaa). So may have to do penance next weekend.I can think of 13 tunnels (If you start at Waikawau). I have been told there is 26!!! If I dont make it can you keep a count for us Aslan and let us know 😀
Hi Colin - enjoy your seat in the Grandstand at the Warriors. Hope you are able to make it to the TTTT - would be good to link up again - cheers SAplogies to Alex if this (talking about the TTTT) is hijacking his thread.
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10879So you're joining the group after the 42nd.When and where are you planning to meet up?Thanks.
Hi Des - assume this Q is directed at me - I'm planning on travelling up from Wellington of Friday and somehow linking with the others at the Awakino accommodation - which sounds pretty full or staying the Friday night in Taumarunui and leaving early Sat am for a meet up that young1 had suggested at Ohura Sat AM.cheers S
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10876Hi AslanI've trawled the TTTTT post. That sounds like an awesome run. So what I need to think about is;- whether I want to do that instead of the road ride that weekend.(leaning to road because I'm planning on making the rusty)- whether I can get my stuff together in time to make it down there for the 27th.- and I need to confirm by Wednesday next week at worst but practically sooner. Those guys have put together a pretty impressive package. The tunnels and tallest waterfall look / sound impressive. I'll let you know what I decide.Thanks.____________________________
cheers Des - I've committed to the Taranaki tunnels - hve been there before and really like the area.I may be up for the 42 Traverse at some other time - wouldn't plan on doing it on my 1150GS though 🙁regards Stephen O aka Aslan
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10871There are a few side tracks, it's an old logging road after all. None of them lead back out though. There is also an option called Fisher track. It's in the area, but I am not sure where it begins.Reofix, would be good to have you along. We'll help to push your bike 😀
Alex et al - I continue to watch with interest - Fisher's Track starts in National Park - couple of streets North of the BP Station - great ride (did it on m DR350 in March) - main challenge I found was negotiating the slippery Papa slabs without the front wheel washing out.I experienced one fall in such circumstances - happened in a flash - would consider taking my 1150 on Fisher's but it would certainly be a handful. None of you keen to join me on the Taranaki Tunnels tour? Cheers S
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10860Alex, I figure the worst that can happen is that we have a good time and maybe incur a little bike damage. The best that could happen is that we'd have a good time. So what specifically was the other option. As for the cold, I'd just come off a long weekend day ride where i had dressed inappropriately and got %$$&%#$ cold for the first part of the day, then that night put on the rain gear and layers and was fine. The one thing I'm reminded to do is to make sure I stay warm. I wonder if the Owhango thing is better later in November but having said that I'd be a starter if the weekend works out. We've had some great riding weather of late and i don't feel i've done enough riding to shake off that feeling that i haven't riden enough lately.I'll give you a call when i know how the next few weekends are shaping up.Cheers
Hi Des and Alex - the alternative I was trying to encourage you both to partake of is the Taranaki Tunnels Tour - see URL (Kiwi Bikeer Adventure forum) earlier in this thread. That ride is on over the weekend 27/28 September and riding Fishers Track and the 42nd Traverse is being discussed by some who have registered for that ride. Cheers S
in reply to: 42nd Traverse, interested? (Oct.4 & 5) #10854Hi Alex – I began to do this ride on my DR350 during the first weekend in March this year but pulled the pin as the weather was atrocious. I managed to do Fishers Track however and would consider taking my 1150 on that track going downhill from National Park to Reteruke on the weekend of the TTTTT (young1's ride to the Taranaki Tunnels & Whangamomona on the weekend of 25/26 Sept.)Would be great to see other BMWOR members who enjoy getting their GS's dirty on this ride.http://www.kiwibiker.co.nz/forums/showthread.php?t=79701cheers Stephen O aka Aslan 🙂
in reply to: New Dual Sport DVD #10638looks good Alex – thanks for posting – hope you're well – cheers S
