Picked my new ST up on Friday and got 600ks done over the weekend. Love it.Noticed a bad false neutral (meaning too frequent) between 5th and 6th.  That common? Maybe it will settle as the gearbox gets more use. Also that big back tyre is rather sensitive to the back brake compared to my Dakar days.  Learning to watch that..!Overall very pleased.

Congrats on the new bike DaveT - will miss your enthusiasm on the gravel rides  😥Cheers Aslan aka Stephen O

nice pics Alex – thanks for posting – the 'Basic' looks good – I'm quite envious - these machines are becoming quite sought after – there's a person over on ADV looking for one. What's that rear tyre your running – looks to be 'coarser' than a TCK. Cheers S

you guys obviously had fun – a great day weather wise – was wondering how you were all getting on throughout the day. That water looks moderately challenging – hope to do the trail myself sometime in the future – cheers  🙄

I've crossed the strait a number of times on both interislander and on my last trip in december with strait shipping. Found the deck crew on strait shipping obliging / considerate of motorcyclists. Also at Christmas I couldn't get on the interislander but in fact strait shipping turned out to cheaper anyway. Also on the way south i was able to use one of the free bunks they provide truck drivers.I use my own tie downs (4) as said already by Koko place machine on side stand, i engage first gear also, and use tie down at each corner (left and right side of handlebar through handlebar brace on 1150GS and through pannier rails (either side) at rear. Each tie down is fastened to fixing/eyes in the ships deck. I also chock the wheels with rubber chocks found on most of the vessels of both lines.Have great travels in the magic south island - cheers Aslan  🙂

🙁sad news indeed Garry - the Dakar certainly exacts a high price! I'm currently reading 'Race to Dakar' the account of Charlie Boorman and his teammates attempts as privateers in the 2006 Dakar. An interesting read. http://www.racetodakar.com/html/intro.html

I know Aslan got some photos as well, over to you young man ..........................

NZGSer is always up for an 'all roads' ride - I was pleased to receive his call on Saturday morning. Thanks Garry - good company as always and a magic day for riding in the Wairarapa. It was great for us to be able to introduce KSlider - so named from his former racing antics on a Kawasaki we're told - a former speedway, motocross and trials exponent who has purchased a very tidy Dakar which he punched along very confidently in the gravel despite it being shod with Tourances. At one stage we left the road to 'play' in a gravel / sand pit adjacent to the river and he demonstated considerable willing to engage in power slides and later on second gear wheelies! The images I took follow.Regret I've still to master the art of 'panning' Garry in order to be able to capture clear images of motorcycles passing at speed 🙁NZGSer disappearing in a cloud of dustHinakura20070106004.jpg[/img]KSlider approaching the riverHinakura20070106005.jpgNZGSer Pressing OnHinakura20070106009.jpg[/img]alongside the riverHinakura20070106007.jpg[/img]passing through Summerhill Station[/img]Hinakura20070106008.jpg[/img]

Stephen its great to see riders using there GS bikes for what they are built for. Might see you at the Mangawhai ride

Thanks Dean - I'm always pleased to discover someone else in the register who is keen to use their GS on gravel roads. As for Mangawai - we'll have to see nearer the time. Seems from your posts you're having a ball with your HP2 - cheers Stephen

Peter – another possible source may be Touratech http://www.touratech.de/new/main.php?content=19they make a lower pillion footrest for the GS. Not sure whether these would fit the Rockster. The part # is 041-0621.Good luck - Aslan  🙂
