There is a hole at the front end of the oil pan on my '97K1100LT that has started to drip oil at an alarming rate!  The hole is situated almost centrally between a couple of pan-holding bolts a little forward of the front edge of the pan.  It's shown on illustration #196 on page 130 [and maybe in illustrations #198 & 199 on p 131] of Clymer – but I can find no reference to it in the text.  It looks as though a holding bolt has been lost, but there appears to be no thread – and it's about 65mm deep!  Can anyone suggest what it's for, and why it's dripping oil?

Hi Bryan,             I can't seem to open Koko's page but if it is talking about a leaking water pump or oil pump gasket then it is probably on the right track because the water/ oil pumps housing is directly above it. So is it oil or could it be coolant?

Many thanks for your comments, Uncamoose & Koko.  The BMWMOA forum gives lots of alternative suggestions, none of which appear conclusive, and most very expensive!  I've taken the easiest suggestion as a temporary measure: “plug it until you can get it fixed”.  A plastic golf tee fits perfectly, and proves the oil is coming from the hole rather than from a leaking oilpump, sump gasket, or other hidden source.  I'll take it to Experience & have them diagnose.
