I am getting down to the point of adding a couple more things to the bike and was interested in comments on which GPS to go for and why?

i like the zumo… its kind of idiot proof … not too techy… has indiscretions… but mapping nz accurately and keeping it up to date for a small user base must be a commercial disaster really… open source has its advocates… but you need a manual.. take your choice

ahhmmm … okay.(It's either late and i need to read this in the morning or I'm a little slow)I'm a little grey on what you meant, so do you mean the following? so Zumo is not entirely accurate at times...and it sounds like some units run open source stuff but you need to be a technofile.  I'm in the simpler school....Thanks

The Garmin maps are very accurate but what I suspect reofix means is that if a road is upgraded, say a roundabout is removed and replaced with traffic lights it will still tell you there is a roundabout there unless you have the very latest update on your GPS and these are pretty expensive to upgrade.My Quest for instance when I go along the newish Highbrook Drive to the motorway from East Tamaki tells me to turn around as it shows me riding over water but as soon as I get over the new road it sorts itself out.

Thanks Jim, I don't see the thing as being relied on to tell me where to go and I certainly expect to ignore the thing.I'm also guessing it chooses miain roads over secondary etc. I'm a big secondary road short cut fan. Especially getting around Auckland. So my guess it will just keep recalculating.I used on in oz when I was last over because you can get them with the rental cars. It didn't take long to realise I needed to ingore it even driving around a big city for the first time. But when I'd driven the way i needed to then it came in handy for the detail.So do you have  brand recommendations...

There is a New Zealand Open GPS Maps project, providing free maps of NZ mainly for Garmin GPS. So why would you spend that much money on something you're going to ignore? Reminds me of me and my first wife 🙁EVERY time I ride with MR GPS we get screwed up.....best look at a good map and know where you're going.

I mainly use mine to — load up complex routes on the pc beforehand… or just get lost on the back roads and poke in the nearest town of size … pub and restaurants … at about 4 oclock… and let the gps land me there … no flapping paper …

I look at the map and think I know roughly where i want to go and then navigate what i think is best. You find some real interesting stuff when you go across the back of places.I don't see GPS as getting me there, more getting me there when i need it. If the left turn looks interesting and i think I'll get to where i want to go and the GPS says go straight I'd probably turn left.Who is Mr GPS?NZ is so small it's pretty hard to get lost for too long.

The dark screen looks great. Are you going to the Hamner Safari I've booked and paid, I'm taking down the 450. I've also booked and have rented a 650 Dakar for the 2009 Australian BMW Safari at the end of March two of us are going over. Should be fun riding all over Tasmania for 6 days.

+1 on the new avatar.  Was that photo taken when you were on the 2008 Moon Safari?How much longer on the 450?  Must be pretty close!
