I was thinking recently about the way we give names to things mechanical that we rely on to make our lives more bearable, things that transport us around or generally just work hard for us, every day, things that when they go wrong can make our lives that little bit more inconveinient so we treat them with a little respect, and sometimes give them a name, with this name comes affection, emotion, character and a personality even identity.Sometimes the name reflects the type of persona this machine projects and sometimes the name is nothing more than an extension or abreviation of the manufacturers name or specific model.I have owned many mechanical means of transportation in my time but have only really given names to a few,I had a BSA bantam I once named DOBIN after what I think was a particularly sluggish cartoon donkey of the era,it suited the bike well,it was slow and cantancerous and often would refuse to move.We also had a volkswagen beetle once which was affectionatley called BILLY for no real apparent reason. Our 4 x 4 is called tinkerbell simply because there is a bell on the keyring and when my wife is searching for the keys she just shakes everything in sight untill it rings, bags, coats, etcMy wifes red MG is called BABZEE because thats the name on the plate (her name is Barbara)My current steed has been named BINKY a name that derives from a horse in a series of books by the Author Terry Pratchett, not just any old horse mind, this is a special horse that carry's DEATH himself around the universe........The name seems to suit the bike well and is a talisman of reliability and trustworthyness (after all you wouldn't want to let DEATH down on his way to a party would you)So my question is just for fun.... WHATS YOURS CALLED /WAS CALLED and why ?RegardsRINCEWIND

Jean reckoned the Eleven-hundy-ess had 'good vibrations' when she got on the pillion: most of you have seen the graphics on the side of the fairing………………. First Beemer, K100LT, was called "The Mortgage", Jean's Burger is "2nd Mortgage".  We live in the "Finance House".

See now I like that,it is a name derived out of reason and necessity,it also portrays the true reality of owning a motorcycle, they are not cheap toys, they are an expensive commitment. Or in the Eleven-hundy-ess case an expensive marital aid (oooeeer)!

:-[ For some reason we also seem to give my toy things female names and my partner's toys male names:My car is called Tweetie = Canary yellow Getz - for some reason everyone calls it the Yellow Peril ???His car is called Sven = Saab - it requires Herring to run, not gas, of course....I call my Gummikuh "My Girl" and I call his Ducati "The Italian Stallion" ... but otherwise we are perfectly normal, honest  😉

well, it's funny you should ask …The 1150 is Zebedee, 'cos when I picked it up in the UK, the dealer had selected a rego for the bike and the letters were J Z C, for my initials ... if you ever see the bike I've turned the UK plate aroung to use as a backing fro the NZ plate.Based on that, Zebedee "sprung" (the character in the Magic Roundabout) to mind as the name of the bike, and I've also adopted it as my ADV forum name, not that I venture too far out of "old 's cool" generally.Obviously when I acquired the 80, the only logical name was Florence, 'cos she is an airhead after all ...  ;D

I guess if you had a bycycle a logical continuation of the theme would require it to be called "BRIAN"

Who wouldn't have been inspired to name a Red R1100RS Enzo :- ? With our “Poco Ferrari” Bimmer liveried up in “Rosso Corsa” it would be almost criminal not to pay homage to the mighty Italian himself  :-[. Dino was an option but we were a little concerned those with post 2000 machinery would think we had forked out hard earned Ed Hillary's on a dinosaur. Adolf just wasn't an option ...Cheers,  :-*Herr and Frau Baron

Some time ago I had plans for a Saab, coloured yellow, with the model name Saab Marine. The advertising jingle would be "We all drive in a yellow Saab Marine.".Groan..... Normality reigns. Our van, a Nissan Urvan, is sometimes called Morrison. And sometimes Urvan the Turrible.

The R/60's number plate is 90bby and has always been known as nobby ever since it was owned by Jim Cross then Ken Whybrow and Theo van der Viel in the 70s and early 80's (it left the factory in '73, registered here in '74). The Rockster's plate is 23 zna and I was tempted to name it Xena but it was too kitsch, and not a feminine entity so I just refer to it as the rockster. There is a '73 2002 in the garage, which is nobby's soulmate,  but it has not acquired a name despite having character to burn, and  it also has a masculine entity. I could call it Butch. No. Ferdinand? I once had a wee boat called Fog Ducker, that I used on the Willamette River in Oregon.Thinking about this, we needed several weeks before we decided on the first names for our children, the name has to fit the personality.
