I did the motard to dirt bike conversion on Saturday to go to the Waikaretu Trail Ride put on by MR Motorcycles on Sunday.  There was a 80km loop through private land which is only opened up once a year for this ride.  There were 600 bikes, $30 each with all proceeds going to the Waikaretu School.  The scenery was absolutely stunning!  The loop led us to the beach and some enormous black sand dunes and a beach which isn't accessible to the public.  No crashes, sorry, but here are some video highlights:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KS37KtMegAQThe view from a ridgeSome guy I ran over (his fault, not mine)Yes, it was a bit congested at times, and yes, there were some dickheads treating it like a race.  But It was still well worth it.DTY

Thanks for posting that. Last year I watched the bikes up on a ridge from the Nikau Cafe, it a neat area and I would be keen to do the ride next year. Do you think it could be done on my R80?

You'd definitely make it through.  There were quite a few quad bikes, from racy ones to big farmer ones.  There were really only 4-5 steep hills, and then the dunes.  I have always said that as a road bike, the KTM with its 50hp is quite manageable.  As a dirt bike, it's far more than I would ever need.  Until I came to those sand dunes!  Wow, so many people were getting stuck because they had to stay in 1st or 2nd gear, when the KTM would grunt it out in third to maintain speed on top of the sand.  I've never taken the bike in dunes before.  I want more!If you click this link and download the file, you can open it with Google Earth and see the GPS trace of the morning half of the loop.  (up to the lunch stop)https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0B_Q47WzBUsYEZWZhZmI3YjMtYTcwNy00OWVjLTg4ZTItMjk5NmUwOGEzNzlk&hl=en_GB&authkey=CMfu6pMNIf you get a big red X on the map, go over to the left of your screen, expand the GPS Trackmaker, and untick the "Images" box

Great video, Dave.  Amazing to see the number of ignorant goobers that just can't consider others: they're not ALL out on the road, obviously.Bought back fond memories of plodding through similar country on the AG100A back in the day when I was still a cocky.  Although it was a great farm bike, the AG was worse than useless on sand, even with the tyres all but totally deflated (rim locks rule.)  That kinda going, whatever the question is, the answer is more power, and farm bikes don't got some.

That looks so much fun….pity about the inconsiderate wankers with too much testosterone who thought it was a race day….GREAT pictures though,that camera is amazing.
