What is the effectiveness of a viscoelastic pad on a motorcycle seat to reduce rear-end/lower back aches on long rides?
I don't know about these, but a number of people I know swear by a sheepskin seat cover.Cheers,Alex
Dunno if it's the same stuff but, I had my R1100s seat reupholstered using 15mm orthopaedic foam and the spoofy square sectioned skin that helps it work (at least that's wot the man said) Made a helluva difference too. Even at mate's rates it was $150 but money well spent.
Any photos? Phil
Hmmm, I've been here before (with the staintune) and got stumped by the size of the file. I know how to inflate a tyre, change oil, boil water but the simple task of posting a photo is beyond me. Perhaps our webmaster could put a helpfile on this page somehow????CheersDumb-ass
I did suggest this the other week may be some one is working on it Phil

Any brand name, or info where can be sourced?

I have had a go at explaining it. Please check here.http://forum.bmwor.org.nz/index.php/topic,813.msg4140.html#newLet me know if this is useful or not.Cheers,Alex
I got an Air Hawk seat pad from a distributor in Australia. Google the name and you will get the details. These were designed originally for hospital use but over the years have been adapted for pilots, truckies and motorcyclists. I find it great.
Viscoelastic – is the just the fancy word for good old memory foam? If so, it's way better than sheepskin, I had a bike in the UK with a memory foam seat, was nice 😀
This is what I use. And yes I know the bike is still in the garage 😳 Phil
I'll be seeing the man on monday and I'll ask if it has a name and point of sale
AnonymousInactive29/09/2007 at 9:45 amPost count: 84Many thanks for all replies. I have ordered an AirHawk ex Oz after trialling one loaned to me by Barry. Seems great even after an hours ride which is a record for me!. BTW, VitaFoam in Patiki Rd on Rosebank Peninsula stock 'memory foam' aka viscoelastic foam. I was given a 'sample' on enquiry- by a senior staff member of subsidiary company “Comfort Technologies” [ask for Alan]. This was a big improvement, but nowhere the comfort of the loaned AirHawk.
I asked my man and got a not too specific response. It's called Suntuff (tough) but he doesnt know how it's spelt. They use it in seats etc for parapalegics because it does away with pressure points. The skin he used is Basket weave which doesn't last quite as long as the standard BMW skin. It's no longer available so all this is a bit useless really!.PS. If that's a sheepskin on Phil's bike is that wot they mean by sex and travel?
AnonymousGuest01/10/2007 at 7:49 amPost count: 2134Until very recently I worked for an office furniture manufacturer: we would occasionally get customers specifying memory foam (ex C-Tech, a.k.a. Vita Foam). Because I could, I used to test fly their chairs to see what the big noise is about memory foam: basically, when you sit on it it disappears. It is the damndest stuff to carry if you pick up a bundle to move it anywhere. It shrinks to nothing wherever you grab it, and kind of oozes out of your hands. When you sit on it, it moulds right up to you like marshmallow: you would want to be in an office with aircon, because it's really familiar with your body parts in hot weather.I couldn't understand what the supposed advantage of it was, neither could any of the upholsterers, neither could our designer. So it's good stuff on bike seats? Could be, the designer pedalled a Harley, so what would he know about motorcycles? (A Harley riding designer is surely an oxymoron?)
