I never thought I would ask this, but with four bikes in the garage it cannot be avoided. Which one is the cheapest usable charger that will do an XLR200 and and R80GS, one at a time of course? During summer it's not much of an issue, but in Winter I prefer to  ride the 1150 to work. It's nice to have brakes when commuting. Thanks,Alex

I bought a Deltran Battery Tender when I got my first bike with ABS.  It sits in the drawer unused at present because I had to get a fancy BMW one for the GS.  The Deltran was very reliable and you can borrow it for a while to see how it goes prior to purchasing if you would like.Malcolm

Oops, sorry Malcolm, I got the impression you wanted to sell it.  I'll keep an eye out on trade me. I've noticed the range goes from $50 to $300 as I have no idea what specs the bike needs I'll have to do some more research. I want the cheapest no frills usable one.

Hi Alex, I'm probably in the market for a charger/tender too.Last time I was in Cycletreads, I was having a look at one of these ... http://www.cycletreads.co.nz/content/catalogueViewEntry.aspx?profilePK=all&entryPK=2196 ...  Any thoughts or recommendations gratefully recieved, particularly as both of the bikes have got gel batteries.

Yep, I definitely need one, had to jump start the Basic this morning, so I could go and get a warrant for tomorrow's ride.

HiThe Deltran tender is a good choice, you can get single or multiple units depending on how many bikes you want to hook up and what your budget is, and its suitable for glass matt batteries as well.Be careful though - all 2004 (and some of the late 2003) models, with the exception of the F650, require a generation II Gel Battery Charger if you are using the onboard power socket to plug into - the use of any other charger will overcharge and damage the battery.Bikes with CAN BUS technology, i.e. R1200GS-RT-ST---K1200S/R, come equipped with either an AGM or GEL battery, depending on the model, and to charge these through the accessory socket requires a special charger, like the BMW Maintenance Charger, and these come with specific instructions on how to use it. You can charge the battery directly on the battery terminals if your charger is suitable for charging a AGM(glass matt) battery, and the Deltran is fine for this.DO NOT try and charge the battery thought the charge point/aux socket unless you have a specific charger, it will blow the main computer on the bike - many $$$$.If you have the right charger and you’re using the charge point/aux socket then:1: Turn the ignition of the motorcycle to the "ON" Position. 2: Connect the battery charger to the ON BOARD SOCKET first, THEN connect the power plug to a 110 volt outlet. 3: NOW Turn the ignition key to the "OFF" position. Note - if a battery fails due to improper maintenance or if any damage is incurred on a CAN Bus equipped bike due to the wrong charger, these items are not covered under BMW Warranty.Hope that helps

Well, you live and learn.  I’d always taken the cynical view that using the new fangled BMW chargers was some sort of marketing ploy.I don’t suppose you know if it’s possible to check if your bike requires the new fangled chargers?  My 1150 GS was delivered October 2003, and has got Frankenstein type bolts for plugging jump start cables on to, and apparently they were only fitted onto GS Adventure bikes, so atleast I can plug a charger on to those quite easily if it does require the $$$ BMW $$$ option.

Question to ask is - does my bike use CANBUS single wire technology? As far as I know it was only the 2004 1150GS Adventurer fitted that used it. I suspect with an 03 1150GS, answer is no.Cheers,

Well, the charger is plugged in and sems to charge the 1150 quite nicely. The above method sounds quite complex, and where on earth would you find a 110V outlet  😕 😀I have promised myself to do more research in future than to tackle a problem with out sufficent knowledge. The trouble is of course that it is not always obvious that there is more depth to the problem.

Answer:  As you suggest, a resounding no 😀... and I didn't realise that they'd started messing about with CANBUS on the 1150's
