I've been putting my bike in for a service for the past five yearsand it runs well. Then i'm out and about and suddenly it startedback firing and I'm miles from anywhere and for the first time I realzed I know nothing about my bike. Yes its still back firingI think it maybe a spark plug thats what somebody mentioned..I want to travel next summer around the South island but don't wantto be at the top of some mountain asking myself whats wrong withmy bike if something happens. Is there any like minded people out therearound the Auckland area or on line who know about these bikesI'd like to chat about the do's and dont's.One last thing is, I can't justify upgrading an amazing machine if thats whatsomebody is going to tell me.Regards Pete0211 49 6674or --  petermartin@live.com

We're all like minded people here, Pete. Some more than others :-). Is it proper backfiring, or more of a popping sound from the exhaust? Since I've had the cat removed, my exhaust pops a bit own deceleration, if I time it well I can make it go 'bang'. This is caused by unburned fuel igniting in the exhaust. You might have a leaky injector, that  causes your problem. Is your fuel consumption OK?Cheers,Alex

Gidday PeteThis place is a wealth of info and helpful folk. I have been registered there since my Rt1100 and now with my R850 still find it a useful place.http://www.bmwrt.com/Also, have you got a copy of the service manual? you can download the original BMW one on the net or buy a Haynes/Clymer type.CheersTracy

Sorry if I'm a bit late with this. Since i sold my 1100 a couple of years ago i'm now working pretty much on memory. Check the throttle cables where they come out from under the tank and follow them to the adjusters on the side of the injectors. The cable outers should fit inside a “cup”. Brushing your leg against the cable can be all it takes for them to lift out and then the fun begins. Rough running and backfiring. Also these things run incredibly lean. There is plenty of info to be found on the internet which will tell you how to richen them up a little. Makes them feel like they have gained 5-10HP. I did this on my 1100G/S (with the help of my mechanic mate who also had an 1100G/S). My bike was purchased 2nd hand so we changed that 1st and as soon as my mates was out of warranty it was the first thing he did. All you need is to know is how to use a multimeter.cheersNigel

Does anybody make DVDs on repairing and servicing these machinesThanks  all for the response. I hate those manuals with black & white photosand half the time wondering what I'm looking at. I wish somebody wouldmake a DVD on all the parts of the bike. How good it would be to watch listen and then do it!!!  I changed the spark plugs and it seems to have helped. Now and then theres a small pop on the down hill but I mean small. No backfiringand it runs OK. I have a good set of vacuum gages but find it difficultto know where to start. The other comments regarding the leads etcI'll keep my eyes on those just to make sure it doesn't happen.

There is some info out on youtube, you can do a search. It will show you how to adjust the valves and synchronize the throttle bodies.
