BUGGER! my R1150RT has no output drive since last night. serious shedding of teeth and smell of hot oil. any suggestions as to where to from here? brand loyalty is not an issue. extended kms between breaks, upright fully protected comfort, luggage lockers and reasonable handling capability are priorities.any uses for a dead bus?suggestions awaited.

Sorry to hear… budget? New/used?Triumph has reasonably long service intervals along with BMW, but I don't particularly like the support for Triumph...

the chancelloress of the Exchequer did not move my brochure from the kitchen bench, so my guess is the latest RT is in range. But my experience with BMW longevity (171K) & service/running costs ain't flash. i have no gripes about the riding experience. i am of light build  & 5'-7″ stature, so heavier bikes do not appeal (ST1300, FJ1300, K LTs). my experience with my wife's Gladius is that it is faster accelerating, faster top end with one up and better, lighter handling than the barge. trouble is lack of protection tires me, so I could no longer contemplate a day trip around the east cape or Whangamomona. i originally considerred the F800ST now F800GT, but my slippers get wet due to lack of protection down low.

If it's just a lack of drive, how is the rest of the drive train etc? Still poss cheaper to rebuild than to buy again? Particularly if you are generally happy with the package. I've had to rebuild the final drive on the 1200ST twice, still cheaper than buying new?

The R1200RT is certainly one of the lightest bikes in it's class, considerably lighter than Concours 14, ST1300, FJR1300 etc.Protection only comes with the larger bikes, which of course come with weight... unless you get something like a C650 scooter?  ;D

Sorry to hear about the the Royal Barge , no bike likes to go like that.New Bike?  Well it's all about how much You would like to invest?  There's not much out there that offers the weather protection of the RT.  There's  a few new models coming out that are a little lighter with average protection.Kawasaki Versy 1000 , Yamaha's MT-09 Tracer  both under $18k  or about to arrive BMW R1200 RS or the S1000 XR .  Kawasaki have their upgraded 1400 GTR out shortly but You are getting into more weight again.  What is the perfect  bike?
