Yeah Dean, you have missed the point! This is to avoid running out of gas, which can be inconvenient.

Yesterday I had to push my R80 for the last 3m to the pump. I was on reserve, but had only turned the tap about 4km ago. It just started to splutter near where I was going to fill up. Looks like I'll have to pull the taps to check on the reserve straw, they may have come off.I know that I can get 400km from a full tank, but I don't aways fill it to the top during adventure riding, so I really need to fix my reserve. :-). They aren't easy to push.

I have had the opportunity to compare my fuel bars with Hilton's Black R1150RT over the xmas break and have discovered only half my fuel bars are lit when filled. Once the last one went out at 250km, the orange warning light glowed constantly before I filled again (21 Lts) at 420km – so I still had another 2 litres left. Many thanks to everyone who commented and now I'm armed with some knowledge I'll see if Henry at Experience will fix the problem under warranty.

As per Slak above , the only reason I want to know my fuel consumption is so I can plan the most fun between stops. The other issue with running a bike with a high compression engine is finding 98 RON fuel. East cape we were reduced to 91 and much of the west coast of the south island only had 91 or 95. Consumption increased on 95 and we planned to get 30-50 km  km less between fills.

Shell has great fuel. you'll have no problems using it as well you don't have to pay BP's over priced 98.

We just did 3,000 km in just over a week with my R 1100S and a 900 SS Ducati that has been bored to 940 (Stage 1 kit) On the 98 BP we consistently got better throttle response and the 1100 S would pull strongly from 1600 RPM in 5th. On the Shell 95 it felt the same from 2,000 RPM upwards.  We generally headed for a fuel stop once the light came on and sqeezed in about 14 litres in the BMW and 15 in the Ducati. When you take into account the additional 30 to 50 km per fill on the 98 it actually works out cheaper to run the bike on BP 98. The Ducati was the same - it was far more tractable and smoother on the 98 .

Interesting I wonder how the bike would perform on Gull Ethanol. BMW have confirmed the there bikes can run on Gull Ethanol. I've never worried as all the big bikes I've owned has been way over powered for me and the main reason I don't use BP is they are never customer friendly with there pricing tactics.

I can vouch that my R1100s LUVS the Gull blend, and also the Mobil 97 with Ethanol.  On an index of price I would run Gull, but here in South Auckland Brotown they are so wedded to prepay because of driveaways that only the Gull on Roscommon Road will open the pumps for bikers.I got tired of the game with my local (Great South Road, Takanini) Gull refusing to let me fill without prepay, and me going and laying all his gas nozzles on the ground so he had to undo his life support from the till to hang them up when I rode away. (What me, Constable, an agitator? Whatever makes you say that?) I just go to my local Caltex now for the day's first fill. By the time I take my helmet off, the pump is live. And the Techron in that fill of Caltex means I never have to buy injector cleaner, so I do the same thing with my cage, on the (very) rare  occasions I use it.

Look what you started, Alex!! Good to see you and Kerry yesterday. (I did get the wheel cleaner on the way back home!)Question: what is the best fuel for the R1150RT, and if different: for the F650GS?We don't have a Gull shop handy to where I am, and I don't care to ride down to Otahuhu, which is the closest one, for a fill up. And of course I have not used Shell for the last decade after their atrocities in West Africa, about which many readers/riders/members will be aware. Thanks for the help!  Cheers The Loins

Maybe its time for me to rekindle my chemistry skills how about a 100 RON ethanol blend using BP or Mobil. And yes all the oil companies have a serious amount of anti social and anti environmental bagagge - so should we refuse to use any of their fuels - that would lower the average fun quotient. And I am with Bwucie - if the station is prepay then they dont get my business

What I have done is ask for $200.00 worth of fuel then only put $20.00 in. They have to then give you change. This means they have had to pay bankcard fees on the $200 plus you get the air points on the $200 and it has cost you nothing to draw the cash out as well you keep getting interest on the money in the bank until you have to pay the monthly card bill. If only fuel stations would accept credit cards at the pumps like the rest of the world.
