I am getting quite a bit of pinging under hard acceleration. Has anyone else had that problem and if so, how did you deal with it. Other than the pinging the bike is running well. It can't be all that good for it, so I am a bit concerned. Just to be more precise, it also happens with 98 Octane and it's on the 1150.
pinging is not good, if you must continue using the bike before checking the timing and general state of tune,plugs etc. change down to a lower gear when accelerating this takes the load of the motor and reduces the chance of pinging. There can be several causes including a build up of carbon on the cylinder head, if yours does it there will be others as well, the answer will be on one of the oilhead lists.

The GS will run okay on 91, that's why it's got knock sensor, but if your running on 91 a lot you will end up with carbon deposits that don't help much eventually. The gas here in the NZ sucks for the most part. Best advice is to stick with 95/98 unless 91 is all you can get. Use the highest octane gas you can find and run some fuel injection cleaner every 5 or 6 tank loads, see how that goes.

You are so correct.
The bike has never seen any 91. I only use 95 if I can't get 98. I get pinging from first right through to fifth gear, this is rather annoying. The bike has new plugs and filter, the valves have been adjusted and the throttle bodies have been synced. It is running very well apart form the pinging issue. With a near empty tank the front wheel will come up on acceleration, and that's the best it's ever done. The only issues I can think of is the end-float of the rocker assembly, though it's still within spec and the fact that the right trottlebody shaft has a little bit of movement. The bike idles well, runs smoothly with only the slightest hint of a surge, more imagined than actual.Can I check for carbon deposits through the spark plug hole? Is there a method to get rid of it without pulling the head? I like to use all the numbers on the tachometer, that aren't red, but most of the time I'll sit on 3-4000 rpm when cruising.
I'm getting confused, pinging or ignition knock is serious, I havn't come across a motor yet that knocks in every gear usually only when pulling to higher gear for the conditions. End float in the rocker gear isn't as serious on the scale of things. Get a screw driver (long one) or if you have a stethiscope even better, and press it on the rocker cover if it is end float you will hear it, also it will probably only be on one side. this will either eliminate it or confirm it. You could put some “Moreys” in the fuel, this will assist in removal of carbon if there is any. Check the ignition advance if you can, I don't know for oilheads but the later airheads with the bean can ignition cannister sometimes had issues with sticking and either not advancing or not returning from the advanced position.
Yes, I am concerned about it. Maybe this load of fuel was a particularly bad lot of 95. It happens when I aggressively open the throttle, even at higher revs. I shouldn't do it, but it's a bit like picking on a scab. I will take it easy until the next petrol stop and I will avoid 95 like the plague. I suppose you never know what's in those tanks, for all I know the tanker put the wrong fuel in. I don't know how to check the ignition timing, maybe I'll have to take it in to Experience. Thanks for all the feedback. Oh, I suppose some injection cleaner won't hurt.
Alex, first off, the GS has not got a knock sensor! One other thing worth checking, is the 'pinging' coming from one side of the motor? it's not unusual for the r/h throttle body to develop a bit of play between the butterfly shaft and the main casting. It doesn't seem to happen on the left, maybe because the TPS keeps things in check. I got a new throttle body under warranty on my 1100S in the UK, same thing happened on my GS, but I didn't bother persueing it.If it turns out to be end float on the rockers, it's easy to adjust, you just loosen off the mounting bolts and pinch the mounting blocks inwards, then tighten up again.
Define “PING” Pre Ignition or knocking as it is known usually occurs at lower revs when the engine is under load (hard acceleration etc)My bike (R1100GS) has a pinging noise when accelerating out of corners. Its more of a tinkle than a knock so I have been looking at guards shrouds etc. I will be interested in what you find with yours Alex
I have heard different theories on the cause of the noise. Some say it can be cured with an updated left side cam tensioner, while other reckon it can be a vibrating throttle body. I am pretty sure it's pinging, because I was testing out all sorts of situations. when forcing it the temperature gage went up one bar and the engine bogged down briefly. I know that's not good. I am not sure what's changed, because it is more severe than it used to be. Could it be a change of additives to the fuel? Are they already adding bio-fuel components to the mix?I like to accelerate hard out of corners. The bike has loads of torque and I am not lugging it. The knock sensor was introduced with the 1200GS, I suppose they've must have raised compression to squeeze out a bit more top end.Maybe it's just general wear and tear, the bike has 81000 kms on the clock and it could just be that some vital components no longer cooperate like they used to. However, like I've mentioned before, they bike runs really well and has plenty of power (well, has all the power it came with).If I can't find the cause I'll have to retire it from sportsbike duty and use it for touring and general sightseeing duty :-).Bing offers rebuilt kits for the throttle bodies, but I'll only go down that track if it's related to the pinging.

Mine is definitely pinking as in rubbish fuel: the bike is hardly run in.A succession of jobs monstering my time means I have hardly been riding it, and I will be deeply pissed if it is worn out at 31,000 Kms (I was deeply pissed when the swingarm bearings had to be replaced at 20,000). The pinking is not a problem to me now, because one of my monster jobs has done in one of my knees, and until I have had a bit of knife work I cannot change up, or bear the pressure of my knee against the tank.After the surgery I will syphon the Bimmer, and drop the fuel in my Vectra, then refill the Bimmer with NON-SHELL 95 or 98, and I am sure my machine will be OK.
I have a tendency to panic about these things. While I am commuting I don't have the opportunity to ride like an idiot, so no pinging.I'll make sure I'll have a fresh tank for the ride to Whangarei, just to compare results. I am sorry to hear about your knees, I hope you'll get that fixed to your satisfaction. I suppose the warranty has run out by now.What was wrong with your swing arm, or rather what were the symptoms that caused you to become suspicious? AnonymousGuest10/03/2008 at 10:32 pmPost count: 2134I didn't know I had a problem with my swingarm: Experience rang me after I had put the bike in for the 20K service, said, “Houston, we have a problem.” So I said fix it, I need a WOF.Bike still felt the same to me, but then what would I know? They said they have a similar problem with the Police bikes: anyone care to comment?Knees and warranty: I've been an Infanteer and a farm worker, and I've walked, run, played football, tennis and badminton and hardest of all on knees, fenced (as in blades, not posts, although I've done that too). I don't think they will accept a warranty claim. Very confident I will be good to go after surgery.
