Another Touratech story in a BMW press release. This time about the female side of the business, Ramona Schwarz.

No sign of slowing down – even with extra baggage

"For Ramona Schwarz, growing up in communist East Germany sparked a desire for travel that has shaped her life, even after having children. The freelance photographer and journalist tells BMW Motorrad that the world is there to be discovered and why ‘staying put’ should be the last thing on any young woman’s mind…It’s hard for most of us to imagine what life must have been like on the other side of the Berlin Wall, but the oppression felt by a young Ramona Schwarz (née Eichhorn) no doubt played a significant part in fuelling her desire to travel the world."Read the rest of the story at: http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/individual/news/2011/news.jsp?id=4005

Can't say I've ever heard of Kurt Yaeger, but apparently he is an actor, a former professional athlete, a below-the-knee amputee, a bike rider, and a rider of BMW motorcycles. There is a BMW press release about this inspirational person.

“Never ever give up” – a ride through life with Kurt Yaeger

"Two wheels mean the world to actor Kurt Yaeger, who rides everything from BMX bikes to top-of-the-range BMW adventure motorcycles. The former professional athlete is also a below-the-knee amputee but he’s such a good rider – on a push bike or motorbike – that you’d never know it. He tells BMW Motorrad how steely determination, loyal friends and strong family ties helped shape the inspirational character we see today."Read more at: http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/individual/news/2011/news.jsp?id=4048

    Out of Africa

"Jolandie Rust is living proof that BMW bikes can change your life. Since returning from circumnavigating the entire African continent on her trusty F 650 GS Dakar, the 31-year-old South African has been appointed as brand ambassador in her home country, has started a global platform for female riders and has successfully trained to become an off-road instructor so she can encourage even more ladies to ride confidently in the dirt. BMW Motorrad meets the unstoppable girl from George who is, quite literally, making life a ride…"Continue reading at: http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/individual/news/2011/news.jsp?id=4068

2015 BMW Rallye Suit Review | Staple ADV Gear Refined

"BMW has introduced the latest version of a perennial favorite, the Rallye suit, with subtle improvements and new colors for 2015. To say this is a marvel of sartorial engineering would be an understatement. The Rallye incorporates more tricks and functionality than a magician’s cloak."Continue reading the UltimateMotorcycling review of the latest BMW Rallye suit at: https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2015/04/27/2015-bmw-rallye-suit-review-staple-adv-gear-refined/I'm very happy with a previous version of this suit, although on colder days the back protector takes a while to warm up and soften. It feels very stiff at first, but is claimed to provide good protection. Personally I don't wish to verify the claim.

    First ride: BMW R1200RS review

Visordown has a first ride review of the new R1200RS. Many have been waiting for this bike to appear, and for the first reviews. It may be a few months before it arrives in NZ, though. The conclusion: "It’s a BMW so inevitably there are numerous accessories even for the kitted-out Sport SE, not least the panniers and top-box that would make it a seriously useful tourer. As our bunch of journalists piled into the bus to head back to the airport, one guy was loading up an RS to ride 2000-odd miles back to Blighty. The RS has a few rough edges that might annoy me if I’d just spent 13 grand on a new Sport SE. But the fact that I wished I was riding one home too, preferably via a twisty detour in the Pyrenees, was a definite subconscious thumbs-up for BMW’s reborn sports-tourer."Read the review, written by Roland Brown, at: http://www.visordown.com/road-tests-first-rides/first-ride-bmw-r1200rs-review/26597.html

UltimateMotorcycling has a story about a 50,000 mile charity ride which is also coming to New Zealand.

BMW Provides R1200GS for 50,000 Mile Ride of Smiles

"Back in 1989, Dr. Henning Butzow began traveling the world via motorcycle. During his extensive journeys, he was impressed by the enormous hospitality and “joy of life” shown by the people he had met.To support Butzow, BMW is donating an R1200GS Adventure for the trip that will take him across North, Central and South America, and into Australia and New Zealand; these locations allow Butzow to trace a symbolic 50 on the map."Read more at: https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2015/04/29/bmw-provides-r1200gs-for-50000-mile-ride-of-smiles/

    Can I be a charity? I want a free bike, I've done 100k on mine! I'm a ph… phil… good-deed-doer  ;D

If you could raise 50,000 euros by riding around on your bike maybe they would consider it. But make sure in your application to complete the word as philanthropist, not philanderer.  ;DHowever, BMW would probably prefer it if you joined up with the Compass Expeditions ride circumnavigating South America, and paid your own way.

South America like you’ve never seen it before…

"If you’ve got four months to spare next February, then how about joining BMW Motorrad official travel partner Compass Expeditions for their biggest ride? It’s a 128-day circumnavigation of the entire South American continent and is back by popular demand for the second time only."Continue reading the BMW press release at:  http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/individual/news/2011/news.jsp?id=4113

My boss choked on 6-7 weeks in 2011, but then he did take 6-7 months in 2013…As I started to ponder it... the US$35k price (not inc bike) scrubbed it  :'(

I can see how that price might put a bit of a dampener on any aspirations. So instead, here's information that might be useful for your next foray into marathon or triathlon support. A C Evolution scooter to supplement the GSA perhaps?  ;D

BMW C evolution and motorcycles contribute to success of London Marathon

"A fleet of BMW motorcycles – including nine C evolution electric maxi-scooters – have been involved in the build-up and execution of the Virgin Money London Marathon on Sunday, 26 April in London. As over 37,500 runners from around the world took part in the 26.2-mile (40 kilometres) race past the iconic landmarks of London, spectators and TV viewers will also have seen BMW motorcycles operating alongside the athletes and competitors. BMW Motorrad UK has been a long-time supporter of the event, providing a fleet of bikes to the organisers for over five years. This year’s marathon was the biggest ever."Read the remainder of the BMW press release at: http://www.bmw-motorrad.com/com/en/individual/news/2011/news.jsp?id=4114

One of the guys based in Chch, works as a commissaire in stage races, affiliated to Bike NZ etc, has been using a C650 since 2013 I think  ;D Seems to like it, has most of his gear under the seat plus a top box.As an aside actually, the organiser of my 2011 USA tour commented on a blog I put on KB (10 years this month since I got my motorcycle licence) and then it got me to thinking of another trip next year, and Dalton/Dempster was on my list. Now I see they're building a 140km extension to Tuktoyaktuk from Inuvik (Dempster), so I might have to hold off until I can do it  :'(

The new BMW S1000XR is currently being shown to the press, and the press kit is available on the BMW group press site.

The BMW S 1000 XR – all good things come in fours.

"Following on from the S 1000 RR and HP4 superbikes as well as the S 1000 R roadster, BMW Motorrad is now unveiling the fourth member in the BMW Motorrad line-up of high-power motorcycles with straight-four-cylinder engines and a distinctly sporty bias. Building on the tantalising and unique mix of innovative technology, performance and safety already inherent to the existing models in this series, BMW Motorrad has taken the next step by bringing out the S 1000 XR, which offers this repertoire of core characteristics in a brand-new blend dubbed “adventure sport”. This encompasses dynamic touring qualities, sporty performance and high levels of comfort as well as outstanding everyday usability. In short, the new S 1000 XR serves up its own individual mix of sporting and touring flair at the same time as injecting a generous dose of emotion."Continue reading at: https://www.press.bmwgroup.com/global/pressDetail.html?title=the-new-bmw-s-1000-xr&outputChannelId=6&id=T0195151EN&left_menu_item=node__4499Documents, lots of photos and a few videos are also available for download from that page.

Continuing on from the previous post, VisorDown now has a first ride report on the S1000XR, written by Roland Brown.

First ride: BMW S1000XR reviewWhere S1000RR meets Multistrada 1200

"FIVE years ago motorcycle performance was dramatically stretched in two directions, with the launch of BMW’s S1000RR and Ducati’s very different but equally spectacular Multistrada 1200. Someone must have parked those iron horses together. How else do you explain the birth of the S1000XR, whose mother is undoubtedly BMW but whose beaky, long-legged look and sporty adventure-bike DNA are straight from the Multi?"...For four-cylinder sports bike riders who are tempted to try an adventure bike, the XR might just be the ideal solution."Continue reading at: http://www.visordown.com/road-tests-first-rides/first-ride-bmw-s1000xr-review/26669.html
