Message from our latest forum member, I'm sure he will be inundated with advice. From nigelp:

Bruce Thanks for your help getting set up, my account is now live apparently. Can you point me in the right direction for advice re biking in NZ as a local, I need to know what to bring with me and what to sell off. Also any advice re insurance brokers and licences would be most appreciated as that's probably what I need to get moving first. My personal belongings will be shipped by the company so shipping is not my issue. I have been approached about a job in retail with a NZ company and it's all a bit of a blur, no planning on my side at all. They are accredited for recruiting overseas and I met with them on Monday and as I'm over 50 it came as a surprise that NZ is an option! I have never been to NZ and so turned to the local BMW branch as my resource for local knowledge as others do when coming this way. Is there anyone in the club who may be inclined to offer some advice, in return I may be able to source and bring any parts you guys can't easily get hold of, but no I can't smuggle a K1600GT through in bits!! I will definately be bringing my R1150GS, 12,000km from new, may also add a sportsbike or naked to use for faster trips out, but there isn't as much price difference as expected and with the £/$ moving my way I may just hold on that and source something locally. Any help would be much appreciated, I'm not going to go too far down the road until any offer is agreed, but kjust want a few basic facts to know if there are any major stumbling blocks. Thanks. Nigel

Welcome aboard Nigel.  Can't help much with specifics as have only the information supplied by Bruce in the latest quote. It has been good for some time for us to buy from overseas however the $ is dropping again as you are aware. Mind you it has done so before and gone back up again so watch closely.  Do make contact with the local members where ever you settle? the GS will serve you well over here and you'll certainly feel at home.  As for insurance you will see on the site that John Baker Insurance does a scheme for members and many are with John but there are other members who get excellent deals from other insurers so best shop around.  Good luck.

Nigel, a few things in there, so lets work through them.1. Importing bikes. If you do, you will have to keep it for I think 2 years at least. If you sell before that you'll pay GST. Details: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/vehicle/importing/index.html2. Price of bikes. Check this website to get a feel for value for NZ bikes: http://www.trademe.co.nz3. Deals can be done through BMW Dealers for insurance. John Baker being one (he's a broker for multiple companies). We also have other general brokers like Kiwibike. For companies, most of the main general insurance companies like AA, State, Tower do not like bikes. Motorcycle orientated ones would be Swann, Star, Protecta and a few others. As usual, stories will vary, with some hating one, others loving the same company. I'm currently insured through Kiwibike with Swann.4. Converting UK licence to NZ one: http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/72/overseas-driver-licences.html5. Thanks, put me down for a K1600GTL  ;D

Guys the job is not going forwards so I am back on hold unfortunately!ANYONE RECOMMEND A GOOD RECRUITMENT COMPANY THAT DEALS WITH RETAIL WOULD BE MOST WELCOME!If I can be of any help to any of you re trips to UK or europe please don't hesitate to ask. I believe very striongly in helping others as I have been helped on my trips to South Africa and Australia by other BMW members.Hopefully I can get this back on track and it has already given me plenty of pointers as to what I need to put in place, so thanks for that.Best wishes.Nigel

Some reckon the recruitment companies are a bunch of crooks, simply running you through software to weed it down to a couple of options, and giving little in return for their fees. Sometimes hunting down a job on your own works better. The Skilled Shortages List may help: http://www.immigration.govt.nz/migrant/stream/work/skilledmigrant/LinkAdministration/ToolboxLinks/essentialskills.htmBut frankly, the older you get, the harder it is to immigrate...  🙁
