Just a quick one..We are looking at doing some camping and I was wondering if is better to have hard panniers and remove the top box and replace that with a bag?I've been around alot of different sites and through mags and have found that a big bag across the back seems to be the most common.. Dave
A top-box can be locked, a large bag usually not. A large bag has the advantage that it's large 🙂 and soft luggage will bulge where it needs to, while a hard box will have to be filled with care. If you already have a top-box and it gives you enough storage, why not use it?
Thanks,Think I will just put the tent poles on the outside of the boxes.. they just wont fit in.I'm also looking at getting a set of Hepco/Becker Aluim boxes at some stage. At least that way I can squash a bit more in and also have flat sides and corners instead of the Givi. The price ex Aus seems to be good.
i have the big touratech aluminium jobbies. if i had my choice again it would be http://www.andystrapz.com/products.php?PCID=51  Alex has a set. yeah they don't lock but good price and expandable and should you drop bike no big deal. I don't like top boxs as they put weight to far back and up high. I use an expandable roll bag. 35 l to 70 l. Got from Siebenrock but they dont seem to sell any more. Have a brand new touratech one sitting here. http://www.touratech-usa.com/shop/show.lasso?SKU=055-0095&-session=touratech:DB5939C5115c53465FsTM125AEDDOther option is tank panniers. They move weight forward and make a nice wind break. Mine are made from 15 litre a side gearsck throwover bags modified. If i go away by myself i usually just take tank panniers - tank bag and roll bag on rear. if my wife comes we load the horse up. Needs her dressing gown
