Went out for a ride today & got all of a couple of Kms before having to abort & come home.Initially I could shift up to 4th gear, but after stopping to turn around I could only select 1st and change up to 2nd. There is a solid resistance to the shift lever, it is locked solid. No untoward sounds from transmission, no other signs audibly or visibly - anybody got any ideas on a possible cause?

Found the fix online – it is caused by the two small ball joints on the linkage between gear change lever and gearbox actuator arm. When these seize up you get this problem. A simple spray of penetrating lubricant fixed it in 30 secs.

Hope you used an approved BMW lubricant, not just any old can of WD40 or CRC, both of which have two radical faults when measured against BM products: they're cheap, and they work.Ref your avatar, please explain to your pillion that one salutes with the right hand, even in the navy. 😮

Also pse note that (the) Navy usually reserve saluting for import occasions, like the arrival of a pay clerk or deliveries of beer/gin/rum to the Wardroom.Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrmehearties.... 😉

Bwucie – I challenge you to personally tell the co-pilot ( a redhead ) that her salute is wrong… Methinks you may wish to re-phrase – her first response was “Who says I am the pillion?”BTW - I used a product called Caig MechanicAll, along with Caig DeoxIt indispensable tools in cansSee you in Nelson?CheersPaul

How about Navigator/WSO? I sometimes used to refer to the Librarian (before I got her on her own machine) as the Wizzo, because she used to get so upset at cage drivers, if she had Weapons Systems to Operate she'd have blown them off the map.Nelson? Maybe; I'm saving what I can sneak out of housekeeping without being caught. Plus, if I get across Cook Strait, I could make a dash for Ch-ch and see my old and wrinkly Pater.

Found out that the shifting problems were due to my new boots !They are thicker than the old ones and we're not allowing the shift lever to return to the position where another gear could be selected. The shift lever was too high up the instep, so a bit of micro surgery with the grinder on the shift lever now has it further towards my toes, and has solved the problem.Hope this helps somebody else with this problem.Cheers,Paul

PS… Good job I did not book it in to the mechanic who was diagnosing gearbox strip down !Met Henry Plowright at Big Boys Toys & mentioned the symptoms to him - he immediately asked " New Boots" ?The voice of experience ( oops, should that be Cyclespot?)
