Interesting that there is some discussion elsewhere on the site regarding a long time member who feels we no longer cater for his interests and ignore him and his bike when he attends a meeting. I find this a very sad situation. The first time we attended a Hot August Night was in 1993 at Plummers Point when Tony Bowman was the local area rep. Tony was very welcoming to a couple of new members and went out of his way to ensure we were looked after. So too were others (Ivan and Dianne Small come to mind) but there were some who showed not the slightest interest in us. Not to worry, we were there to enjoy ourselves and were in for the long haul. As the saying goes “good things take time” 😀Fast forward to the latest gathering at Omokoroa last weekend and we feel totally comfortable and very much a part of the Register. It is so nice to be waved at and approached with a smile and handshake when we arrive at this or any other meeting. Folk from all around the country with whom we have a common interest and have come to regard as good friends. I'm sure we didn't speak to everyone there but we did meet Thames members Warwick and Vicki for the first time and look forward to the next time we meet on the bikes somewhere. Really it isn't hard to belong and have fun with motorcyclists whatever they ride.So Clive and Jean and their team did it all again. What is it that makes this gathering so good. Dedicated organisers and helpers, good planning, great venue with hot pools, wonderful food and of course sixty three or so motorcyclists keen to enjoy themselves in other folks company. Lovely (almost) spring weather helps too. Saturday afternoon saw us informed by Ian McDonald of motor trimming fame about the intricacies of reshaping and designing a custom seat. A selection of very tasty beers to temp the palate. A competition for couples to apply make up to each other in 60 seconds which had us in fits and saw some very artistic results. A really good meal (at least Duxton standards) and mulled wine and other refreshment to lubricate our throats for singing happy birthday twice in the evening and talk our way through to bed time. Early Sunday and just enough time to cook some bacon and eggs before packing the bike to head home. We took the opportunity to follow Peter Lyner and some other local riders part way on their ride through the southern Waikato. We rode with them to Bryce's Cafe at Wharepapa South for lunch before heading north for home. Thanks Clive and Jean and team and to everyone who attended.Malcolm and Jean
