We booked early as usual, always enjoy this weekend and this year was no different. The camp site at Omokoroa is great, the hot pools a bonus. Clive and Jean Dominy and their team are a legend in this part of the world for always putting on a really fun weekend and most of the participants have like us been going for some years.
We had arranged to meet Noel and Maria at BP Papakura at 11am and as it turned out a small group of the Auckland Coolriders/BMWOR members had decided to join us on the ride to our lunch stop then peel off and do a round trip home. On arrival at BP we took advice from Arne who offered to lead us on a tiki tour through the Hunua's to Miranda, then by circuitous route to Paeroa to stop for lunch in the Karangahake Gorge. This was a great choice and after a very pleasant run in the sun we pulled into the gorge to gorge on bacon and eggs, pancakes and cream and coffee. An hour or so later the four of us who were heading to the BOP kitted up and said our goodbyes. Turning right half way through the gorge we took the old Tauranga road making for a more pleasent ride and missing out Waihi village. Soon we were pulling into the camp at Omokaroa.
An interesting talk had been arranged for us by a paramedic about how we should deal with a motocyle accident victim and I'm sure we all learnt a little from the useful talk/discussion and some practical demonstrations using an armless crash test dummy.
Following this was a beer and wine tasting session (really) where a host of beers and wines were available for tasting by some thirsty riders and pillions. For us a soak in the hot pools is essential so we sneaked off for half an hour to luxuriate. Soon after we were gathering for the evening meal which was interspersed with a variety of entertaining interludes including an update on forthcoming BMW models by Ray Holmes of Mt. Motorcycles along with a lolly scramble for some very nice little gifts donated by Ray. A few folk went home with little smiles on their faces and slightly heavier panniers.
Sunday morning and the standard "cook your own" bacon and eggs on the BBQ went without a hitch and by 10.30 we were packed and ready to follow Peter Lyner through some interesting Waikato roads to the Boatshed Cafe at Lake Karapiro for lunch.
Jean and I finally arrived home about 4pm after a thoroughly enjoyable weekend. Great to catch up with all of you from around the country side. Very many thanks to Clive and Jean and we look forward to doing it all again next year.
Limit of three pics so more in next post 😀 -
