I've been meaning to put this one up for a while. We stopped at a lot of places on our GS Anniversay tour from Cape Regina to Bluff last November, but the Helena Bay Gallery and Cafe is just one the nicest places I've ever stopped for a break. Whether it was the food or the ambience of the second day of the ride, the company or just the breathtaking view from the deck of the cafe, I don't care. I shall make a point of returning when I'm passing through Northland again. The Gallery & Cafe is set in beautiful sub tropical gardens with magnificent bush and sea views over Helena Bay on the Old Russell Road on Northland’s east coast. The Gallery, which is owned and operated by Peter Brown, specialises in Contemporary Maori and Pacific Art. They have gathered an outstanding collection of paintings, and wood art, handblown glass, carvings and jewellery from top New Zealand artists. Peter has built the gallery and gardens to best show off the artworks and create an environment for visitors to enjoy. The cafe itself, run by Julia and Uwe, has a deck complete with stunning ocean views. Relax with a cup of coffee or a glass of wine and enjoy European style food. They serve breakfast, lunch, occasional dinners and have a huge variety of homemade cakes, cookies and snacks. Its open 7 days too!
