What is a good gasket sealant to use on oil/water pump to engine mating surface?  I have used “Holt's Gasket Goo Sealant Putty” but am doubtful of its' suitability as it appears to be rather 'thick'.  I can imagine it might not have allowed the mating surfaces to seat completely all round – and thus be the cause of minute oil seepage. I note Clymer recommends “..a thin even coat of Three Bond 1216 gasket sealer”.  It is difficult to apply a “thin even coat” of the Holt's stuff I used.  Any helpful comments?

Hilomar used on and made for Rolls-Royce is easy to apply, doesn't stick to your fingers and remains semi pliable. I have not brought any for a long time, I think it is still available. Is there anyone that can confirm it's availability? Any whoo the silicon base sealers are fine like three bond, just brush it on with a small artist brush for lighter coat. Mind any loose bristles. Clean up in petrol 8) 🙂

Thanks Guys;  I had difficulty in sourcing Hylomar locally, but there are plenty of suppliers on E-Bay (UK) at comparative prices to locally available alternatives (inc. Exchange & freight costs).
