Hi, does anybody know if that would be a warrantiable item, i mean the saft? (The bike is under warranty, and I'm the second owner). The shaft shouldn't snap that easily :x, the lever is intact with the head of the shaft in it. I've found in advrider that a few others had the same issue. Thanks,PampaX
I would imagine it would be under warranty still, and BMW are pretty good with claims.

Today had a talk with Bm and It seems very unlikely I'll get it under warranty. The fact is I had a lay down, and the shaft broke. Here some pictures of the bike and the parts. The bike didn't even scratch the panels.1. A picture of the gear lever with shaft in it 2. The side of the bike
Ah, you didnt mention at first you had dropped the bike, I thought it had been faulty so judging by the pics I wouldnt hold out much hope of getting it fixed under warranty. 🙁
I agree with Jim. It's quite possible that a rock only made contact with your lever, enough to break it. I hope it's not too expensive. How are you finding the bike?

Well not very happy that laying the bike down would cause such a damage, don't know how much yet but is going to be expensive. It would require to take the engine out of the bike, open it, major stuff. The fall was minor, in a clay spot (no rocks) the front washed-out at 10-15k/h ... 😥 ... it was the only thing pretty much ... (the gear lever is intact 😮 not bent). I didn't think an Enduro bike would break that easily I would otherwise never buy it. I've been asking more experienced people if they've ever seen a snapped shaft, so far 'only found one'. Other than that the bike is nice, goes fine on the road, is powerful, very well balanced, and goes really nice off road. Although it has a high seat you don't notice it. Of course is a low maintenance 'engine' being the same (very similar) to F650 GS with a few extra ponies which is very good and what I was looking for. IMO any buyer or owner should consider shielding that area since I'm not the first one on this model to have that problem (see advrider). I've left the bike on the dealer to lodge a claim nevertheless, so will see how it goes.Cheers,PampaX
From the photo it does appear that the shaft is very brittle at that point as if the hardening process hasnt been done correctly and I would tend to agree with you that a small knock like you describe shouldnt have done that, and I would be really cheesed off if it was my bike.
I've only just realized what the problem was. I thought you had cracked the lever. On closer inspection I can now see the snapped off shaft in the lever clamp. This should be a warranty claim. A shaft should not be the weakest part in the assembly, surely the lever should be the sacrificial item. It will be interesting what BMW does.Alex

geez i would hate to agree with Koko but I am gunna have to. The shaft broke, thats bullshit, the lever should of first.
In the search for weight reduction, are the designers getting more adventurous but less cautious? Here is a wee problem I had a while ago. http://forum.bmwor.org.nz/index.php/topic,1058.0.htmlI managed to fix it myself, but now I have a dipstick that isn't long enough to dip. A replacement for this piece of plastic costs $56 plus GST, which is basically another example of the BMW extortion.I have been wondering ever since if I was too ham fisted, or if the designers have left the thing too fragile. Given your predicament, the fragility issue is clear.I don't blame you for being peeved.Just to add another perspective, I used to work secondary employment in a bicycle shop. I love bikes, so the work wasn't really work. Anyway, we used to get lots of kids (young males mostly) who would bring a relatively new bike back with a broken part and tell us they were JRA..................Just Riding Along...................when the part broke. No matter that they had probably been jumping over a small wall, or thrashing the hell out of their new bike. What this all leads to is the manufacturers being very skeptical of warranty claims. I can understand their reluctance.None of this makes me feel better about my dipstick, or your shaft. For heavens sake, it's an ENDURO bike. Surely it has to be fit for the purpose it is sold for, under the Fair Trading Act.Anyway, none of our sympathy is getting your bike fixed, but good luck, as we may all be in the same position one day. 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😕 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡 😡
AnonymousGuest01/05/2008 at 2:10 amPost count: 2134Had a Enduro Kawasaki that i crashed in every which way. Brake and gear levers were as soft as putty and i just bend back after crashing. The hits that this thing took, it should have been broken in half. Must be disappointed that a minor off is going to cost you dearly.
Can you not claim in on insurance? after all you did fall off. I would like to know how you get on and who you are insured with. Phil
AnonymousInactive01/05/2008 at 4:00 amPost count: 10I probably can .. not too sure .. but I believe that's not right. The fall was minor, very minor, it didn't even scratch the plastics. So I would've thought is a warranty issue, now if that doesn't succeed I'll see what are my options based on how expensive it is … doh Will see what BM does ... finger crossed 😐

And ... no! it's not warrantiable. According to all the people I've talked to, almost nobody seen that neither in minor crash nor otherwise (there are many other things that would brake before) bm representative said wasn't uncommon ... for what I have to assume that is common for bmers or at least some bmers. It seems that in order to make them on Asia instead of getting them to have higher standards it's been the other way around ... lower the quality. Considering the price of the bike I'd be better of buying a bike from the dark side that even with more maintenance in theory at the end would be cheaper .... this is going to cost around 1200$ plus buying shielding if I want to use itSorry, for the rant but I'm very very annoyed for the outcome and for the fact that I'll have to spend more money to protect that crap or sell it!
Hard luck mate, I think you have been very hard done by and if it was me I would be really p*^#@ off. 😡When I think of the vast number of times I dropped my Honda XR on trails and into trees etc over four years and the only damage was a broken clutch and decompression lever, it makes me feel very happy on the quality of a jappa trail bike.
