Hi
I recently sold my 97 F650 to a decent bloke who called me yesterday to ask whether the bike dumped oil out of one of the two rubber pipes that point down near the footrest.
He reckons it looses about a spoonful when parked. I don't recall it ever dumping oil but it did dump a little fuel out of one of the two pipes.
It ran wonderfully when I had it and he says it runs well for him too. It has not been overfilled with oil. (Oil has been checked correctly with engine hot, last change was by BMW anyway).
Does anyone have any ideas about why the bike is dumping oil? Is it normal? What is the pipe for?
Any help would be appreciated
Thanks
MarkHi Mark,
If it is leaking from the little pipe (4-6 mm dia) then this is fuel, I would think. I had a 98 Funduro and in the 80,000km I did on it I don't recall ever dumping oil, but it did dump a little fuel out of one of the two pipes, usually when I overfilled it if engine was hot - trying to squeeze max kms on adventures 😆 Does it only happen when he has filled up?
The air box has a drain pipe but this is quite big 8mm + dia but oil can come out from this as the engine breather vents to the air box. More so when Kms get high, how many has he got on it?
The fumes/oil mist from the engine can build up over a while and cause some oil to drip out. Tell him to take out the air filter and have a good look inside the air box clean out any excess oil. Would have to check for heavy breathing, The bike!!!!!!
All the best

Short version of previous attempts to reply
1) Thank you very much for your useful suggestions - I passed these on to the guy I sold the bike to.
2) Almost certain that its oil coming via the air filter
3) Bike had been overfilled with oil - had ruled this out because BMW were the last people to fill the oil - just a few kms before I sold it. Easy enough mistake to make I guess, if that were the cause.
4) Bike not leaking as of today (overfill probably all dumped now)
Thanks again

I guess we've all had to learn this one the hard way. It has happened to me several times on other forums. Now I make a habit of copying the post, or even writing it in word and then pasting it in.nicholsonm wrote:Bike had been overfilled with oil – had ruled this out because BMW were the last people to fill the oil – just a few kms before I sold it. Then definitley a good idea to take out air filter and clean (or replace). Bike will love him for it 8) -
