I am going to take the forum down tomorrow morning and attempt an upgrade to the latest version of the software.  Yes, Jemima, I do expect a visit from the C*** Up Fairy, so I have backups to revert to if it goes sour.Best case, we'll be up and running and you won't notice the difference - mid morning.Next best, probably up by lunchtime, and I will have some cosmetic work left to do.Worst case I'll have to revert to backups, back again at ? o'clock.I apologise for any inconvenience, but I gotta do something about weeding out some of the spambot generated membership applications automatically (I currently do all of them by eyecrometer): it doesn't make sense to me to automate that function on the old software, so I need to get the update done first. ;D And if this annoys you, well feel free to put your hand up as my replacement for the same rich salary I enjoy - $0:00 p.a. ;D

Yes, well, that was fairly interesting!We're back, after another adventure in the dark side of the cyberworld.I'm definitely not going to try upgrading that way in future.  The collapse of the main website and the email system was coincidental, not my work: I only killed the forum.  The website collapsed because we blew our disk space cap, and the reason that happened was because I had a huge (think 4.9Gb) collection of access and error logfiles built up that I wasn't aware of: delete them, problem goes away.Learn something new every day, so I do.Bright side of life, my backup worked perfectly ;D

Nope, but I learnt a bit more about the workings of our website, and found a good way not to update SMF.  Tomorrow I will begin the gradual process of updating by conventional means - creating a new version in a new directory, and swapping when the new faithfully reflects the old.  That way will take a bit more effort on my part, but won't lead to knocking it out like using the SMF web installer did.These boo-boos of mine are just a by-product of the Register leaving me to learn on the job....................And I once again demonstrated the value of backups. 😛
