HiI've just bought my 1989 R100RT and am enjoying riding it, (probably more so than any other bike I've owned in 40 yrs of riding), but my pleasure is spoilt by the difficulty in getting off it!  I'm only 5'6" and approaching 60. The horrible BMW sidestand means you can't put it down when seated on the bike and I have to dismount and put the bike on the centrestand.  I very nearly dropped the bike this morning while trying to slither off the seat.  I read that there are althernative stands and that I can fit a 25mm shorter monoshock which should reduce seat height by 30mm. Have any members any advice to help me please?  I'm starting to dread stopping and dismounting!ThanksJohn

I have a friend who is also vertically challenged, he has a R100RT that they fitted a pull cable to the stand. When you stop you pull the cable knob (rather like an old choke cable, it is  connected the upper part of the fairing) which pulls the side stand down into the extended position, so you stop the bike pull knob, lean bike to the left and it sits on the stand, you can then dismount. when you remount you stand the bike up and reverse the proceedure. It looked very tidy and many older riders remarked on what a good (simple) solution it was.Steve.

Thanks Steve.  That's a very good idea – I'll try it!

Funny to read about the problem with the side stand as I have the opposite issue. After owning a R80G/S for years I recently upgraded to a R1150GS and miss the self folding side stand. I have lost count of the times I have had the R1150GS cut out when I put it into gear to ride off with the side stand down.

Welcome to the forum. Looks like you own my bike's twin :-). Do you still have the R80?

Thanks Kokopelli. No sold the R80G/S to a fellow enthusiast who missed his old one. Being 6ft 5 I do find the R1150GS better suited to my size.
